A short excerpt from Mark Simpson's YouTube video '7 Brutal Lessons Everyone Learns Too Late' (uploaded May 7, 2025). In this segment Simpson argues that you should only compete with your past self—measuring personal and business growth against who you were a year ago—and warns against comparing yourself to peers or others in your community, which he says derails progress.
The only person that you're in competition with is yourself. And as long as you can look back on yourself and on your business a year ago and be almost embarrassed at the person that you were or the business that you were a year ago, then that's fine. Do not look anywhere else outside of that sphere. Do not try and look at somebody in the same city as you, same town as you, same mastermind group as you, and always be comparing yourself to them because you will just do your heading with that game.
