Arnold Schwarzenegger tells Tim Ferriss that 1970s actors refused to promote their films, treating marketing as beneath them. He argues selling and communication are essential skills that built his career. Without people knowing about your product, you have nothing.
Most of the actors in the 70s and 80s refused to sell the movies. They said, this is not my job. I'm an artist. I don't sell. I'm not a salesman out there and all this stuff. This was my strength because I started to be a salesman. And so I realized then the importance of selling, that no matter what you have, if you have a podcast, if you have a movie, you, if you have a painting, if you have a car, a technology, a medicine, whatever it is, if people don't know about it, you have nothing. The more people that know about your product or about your talent, the more you can go and be successful. So therefore, this idea of selling, publicizing, marketing, communicating, convincing, all of those kind of things is an art.
