This YouTube video (Mark Simpson, July 8, 2024) argues that for longer, higher-value vacation stays you should prefer direct bookings over marketplace listings (Airbnb/VRBO). The speaker contrasts short, convenience-driven stays (hotels or short Airbnb bookings) with multi-day family vacations that require trust, local knowledge, and more careful vetting of host and property.

They stay for more days. Think about it like this. If you're just looking for a place, if you're a guest and we're all guests, if you're looking for someone to stay somewhere to stay for one night, maybe you're in town for work, maybe it's two nights at the conference. Hotel can be very convenient. Maybe you're going to go on Airbnb and say, I really have a bunch of people. It'll be easier if we do, if we do an Airbnb there. But when you're looking for that great family vacation or you're looking for a place where you're going to stay for a week or two, you want to really make sure it's perfect. You want to close all the loops there and make sure that you're getting everything you want. So just booking that longer, more expensive stay on an Airbnb listing or a verbal listing, that might not be the right, the right play for you. You might want to be able to dig in a little more and learn about the person, learn more about the area, see why you should trust them with your really important, more expensive stay. So that's why direct bookings are more valuable, because it's the same guests that will book on Airbnb, VRBO or other, but they're thinking about your stay and your property differently.
