An Attitude of Gratitude

Mark C. Winters’ short YouTube talk encourages adopting gratitude as a deliberate daily mindset. He explains the psychological power of gratitude (referencing Stephen Covey’s stimulus–response “space”), shares a personal anecdote about a grieving business partner, suggests simple daily gratitude practices (journaling, a gratitude stone), and gives three gratitude prompts specifically for visionary–integrator business partners. The video closes with a call-to-action to visit Rocket Fuel Ventures for assessments, weekly videos, and the Rocket Fuel book.

Hi, everybody, it's Mark C. Winters. And today I want to talk to you about just a little word. It's called gratitude. Some people say that. That a human being can't hold gratitude and anger both in their body simultaneously. So it's powerful when we think about something that can drive negative feelings completely outside of our body. You know, Stephen Covey said a lot of good things when he would talk about human behavior. He would look at sort of this classical description of stimulus and response, and he would observe, you know, really there's a space in between the two. And in that space, we have a choice. We have a choice about how we respond to any given stimulus. There's a lot of power, I think, in that choice. I'm reminded of a business partner that I had who went through a very difficult time. He lost his wife, and they had a very close relationship. And it was extremely difficult for him as he. As he worked through dealing with this loss. And I would talk to him about what worked, what really gave him comfort, what helped him deal with this best. And one of the things I remember him telling me was Mark, they said, look, you need to think about what you think about. And to me, that's the perfect reflection of sort of that choice in between stimulus and response. Being intentional with our thoughts, being intentional with our mindset. And there's power there. There's power there that shapes how we see everything, how we react to everything that's out there. So question for you today. Are you grateful? How often do you take stock of the things that you should be grateful for? A lot of different ways to do it. I know people that keep a daily journal, and they start their day off by listing out different things that they're grateful for. I know people that will use a gratitude stone. And every morning when they put that in their pocket, they take a time to think about what they're grateful for. And then throughout the day, when they reach their hand in their pocket and they touch that stone, they remember, what should I be grateful for? And they're always reminding themselves of that. So I encourage you to find a way to make it a daily habit to work into your life to make gratitude a core mindset for every day that you've got. So to put this in a rocket fuelers context, I want to give you three things to be really grateful for. The first one is, is whether you're a visionary or an integrator, I want you to be grateful for that counterpart that you have that they are willing to partner up with you to come together as a powerful visionary integrator combination to make this company really go to new heights and make it what it can really be. Number two, I want you to be grateful that whichever side of the equation you are, that the other side has all these complementary capabilities that you don't have, that they're really great at the stuff you're not great at. And, and that's what allows this combination to be so powerful. And third, I want us all to be grateful that we are living in a time and a place where our only limits are really how much and what we can conceive and our ability to go execute and make it happen. What a blessing that is. Thanks for watching. Today at Rocket Fuel Ventures, we're all about creating the most powerful visionary integrator duos on the planet.
