Co-Visionaries

Mark C. Winters says an organization should have only one visionary in its accountability chart, not two. Confusion happens when you split the role. Take the visionary assessment honestly, pick the best fit for that seat, and put other strong visionaries in sales, business development, R&D, or the owner's box.

Hi, everybody. It's Mark C. Winners. And today I want to talk to you about a question that we get actually surprisingly often. And it's simply this. Can we have two visionaries in our accountability chart? And so before I give you the. The whole explanation, I want to give you the quick and simple answer, which is this. No, you cannot have two visionaries in your accountability chart. I want to give you a picture kind of what that looks like. Imagine your accountability chart with your functional leaders and your integrator, and trying to have two visionaries at the top of that thing, it would just create so much confusion and no clarity and really just chaos. We've got to eliminate. We can only have one person sit in that visionary seat for us. Okay? So with that established, let's talk about the process for how we get there. So the first thing to be clear on is just because someone's an owner doesn't mean that they're necessarily a visionary. It's really important that you go and take those visionary assessments a group and make sure that you're honest with yourself, make sure that you're honest with the team when you're completing that assessment, and then sit back and look. Most of the time what we see is there's one person who is the clear visionary. Every once in a while, though, maybe we do see two that show strength in the visionary area, maybe even more than that. And if that's the case, you've got to sit back, think about how much visionary your business needs and who's really going to be able to find fill that seat the best for your company. Boom. That's who goes in the seat after that. Where do the other folks go? Well, a lot of times people who have strong visionary capabilities are great to be in the sales seat or a business development seat, maybe even an R and D seat. So you have to sit back and look at what your business needs, see if they may be the best fit for one of those seats where they can create tremendous value for the organization and really play in their unique ability. Other times, they're simply not a good fit for any place on the accountability chart, and they're happy to sit in the owner's box where they know they can stay plugged into what's going on with their business and sit back and receive their share of the profits. Okay? Knowing that the best and strongest team is in place in the organization. So three key points to wrap this one up. Number one, no, you can't have two visionaries in the accountability chart. We must have one in that seat. Second, take the assessment, the visionary assessment, and be honest. Be honest with yourself. Be honest with the rest of your team. And number three, if you're not going to sit in that visionary seat, see if there's another seat that you might be the best fit for. Or see if it's real that you might just want to sit in the owner's box. Thanks for watching.
