Compartmentalizing

Mark C. Winters explains how integrators can manage visionary founders by sorting their ideas into four buckets: annual goals, quarterly rocks, weekly tasks, and issues. This framework keeps the visionary heard while clarifying what actually gets done.

Hi everybody, it's Mark C. Winters and today I'm talking to you integrators out there. I want to describe a situation, you know, see if you've heard it or seen it before. The visionary is being a visionary and they are just peppering the team with idea after idea after idea. Or maybe they're handing off their wish list to you, the integrator. And it's a five page wish list and all this stuff. They want it now, they're very impatient. They want it now and it just seems to keep coming. So as the integrator and really the whole team is just having this feeling of overwhelm. It's just too much, too fast. It's coming from every direction. So I want to give you a solution for that. And the solution is something we call compartmentalizing. So here's how it works. I want you to know and have hope that all of those things really just simply fit into one of four categories. I've tried to draw them here for you. Not the best artist, but I took a crack at it. So the four categories simply put are it could be a one year goal. It could be something that is going to be a rock for this quarter, this 90 days. It could be a to do for this week, or it could be an issue and issues we have subcategories. If it's a, it's a long term issue that can kind of hang out there and wait for a while or it's a short term issue which is something that we really need to have our radar and be talking about this quarter. So compartmentalizing is a really powerful process and it allows that idea filled, impatient, visionary to feel heard when you work together with them to decide which category each of those things goes in. It helps you as the integrator gain perspective on where things fit and kind of where it falls into place and how much of a priority a given thing on one of those lists happens to be. It's going to help you manage that visionary, right? It's essential that they feel heard in your same page meetings where you're working to have that meeting of the minds. It's really going to help make your relationship stronger because you're going to be clear, you're going to be seeing those priorities in the same fashion and in your weekly Level 10 meetings for the team, it's going to help the team feel more comfortable and be much more clear on just where things fit with respect to the overall plan. Okay, so three key points for you today. Number one is compartmentalize and in the show notes here, I'm going to link to another video that's going to expand on this concept even a little bit more in, illustrate it and draw it out for you. Number two, that impatient idea filled visionary, they must feel heard. You need to listen to them and let them get that stuff out and just work together to put it together. And number three, you're going to establish this clarity in your visionary integrator relationship over what needs to get done now. Thanks for watching.
