GOOD-ness or OK-ness

Mark C. Winters argues that comfortable is the enemy of growth. If your structure or people won't get you to the next level, you need to make a move. He recommends one deliberate people change per quarter, using two real examples from his Integrator Mastery Forum.

Hi, everybody. It's Mark C. Winters. And today I want to talk to you about an experience that we had in a recent imf, recent Integrator Mastery Forum that was held here in Dallas. At the end of the day, we were doing issue solving and had two separate issues that came up where in both situations, the integrator was accommodating something in their. In their accountability chart, in their structure that wasn't quite right. And in both cases, two separate issues. In both cases, it was creating extra work for the integrator. So as we worked through these, I took both of them through a set of challenges that I want to take you through today. So the first challenge I would ask them is, okay, so looking at the situation you're describing, is that structure the right structure for you to get this business to where you want it to go? And in both cases, the answer was no. So the integrator sitting there shaking their head no, but they both had a rationalization. They had an explanation. And one of them, the explanation was, yeah, but it's not really causing any problems right now. And kind of a little realization sort of washed over them as they said that in the other situation, it was, no, but it's okay. Okay. And they're really good people. And so, again, the realization starts to flow over them. In both cases, it's okay. It's good. It's not causing any problems. But they both verbalize and realize that it was not consistent with a structure that would get them where they wanted to go with the business. So, second level of challenge, if the structure was right, if the structure was the right structure to get you to this next place you're trying to go, would these be the right people in that new structure? And in both cases, again, the answer was no. Which really makes me challenge and question. That's interesting. So how committed are you really to your vision? How committed are you really to getting this business, getting this company to where you want it to go? And if you are really committed to that, why are you not moving in that direction? Why aren't you doing what you need to do to get us there? So to help you visualize this, you know, we live in this spectrum of, you know, things that are bad and things that are great and. And it's easy, or it's not necessarily easy, but it's obvious when things are bad, we've got to make changes, we've got to make moves. So I want to caution you today about getting stuck in the land of okay. Getting stuck in the land of Good. Where you're not necessarily feeling the pain, but it's not great. It's not consistent with where you've decided that you want to go. Okay? So just be careful that we don't hang out there and not make the moves that we need to make. If you want to be great, you've got to choose it, you've got to act like it. And it often means you have to make people moves in that direction. As a rule of thumb, you know, try to make one great people move per quarter. So three key things to wrap this one up. Number one, choose great if that's consistent with your vision. If that's where you want to go, choose it, decide it, act like it, make moves in that direction. Number two, challenge your structure and challenge your people. Are they consistent with what's going to get you to that next level? And number three, make moves in that direction. One great people move per quarter. Thanks for watching.
