Integrators Helping Integrators

Mark C. Winters leads integrators through a common problem: when the visionary also fills other seats like head of sales, accountability breaks down. Peers share examples of stalled work and recommend direct conversations using the "hats" metaphor to clarify which role the visionary is acting from. The outcome is either real engagement or a role change.

Hi, everybody, it's Mark C. Winters. And today I want to invite you to be a fly on the wall during a fast paced issue processing session during a recent integrator mastery forum. So here's to kind of set the stage. One of the integrators in the room has raised an issue where their visionary is also still sitting in some other seats in the accountability chart. So they're struggling to deal with this. So I've gotten some experience, some input, some good ideas from some of the other integrators in the room already to kind of help them speak to this situation. Then I throw in my 2 cents. So take a look.
Card together using the responsibilities for a visionary. And then we tie that back to our strategic plan and we figured out what we would assign to him that.
Ties ties to that. Okay, so clarifying question, are we talking about a visionary that's in another seat as an employee? Is that right? So not so much in the visionary seat, but in this other seat that they sit in. Okay, so somebody else on that piece of it, that nuance. Here we go.
I had that with one of my owners, actually. My owners, like I owned the owners, reported to me from a finance perspective. Right. And nothing got done.
Right.
And stuff didn't get paid or stuff was overpaid or not billed. And it just came down to having a very direct conversation and helping them understand the impact on the business and what sort of message that sends other people. They actually end up breaking down crying in my office. It was the funniest thing ever.
He laughed cheerfully.
You can't leave my office.
Cry, sit down.
And anyways, but he ended up stepping.
Out of the business.
He's not involved anymore.
Okay, so direct conversation. Yeah. Okay, so let me give you something on this one. I'll come back. Okay, so what I've seen be really, really effective here, it's the whole hats thing. Okay? So remind them about the hats. So sometimes you may need to get them to verify with you who am I talking to now? Am I talking to you as the visionary or am I talking to you as the head of sales or whatever other seat they may sit in and kind of go into that and again, just re emphasize with them in the same page and how important it is in that seat that they play just like anybody else we would put in there. And so many times when you do that and have a really good direct conversation around it, that kind of breakthrough happens where they either engage or we can make a change. Okay, all right. Anything you want more or are you good? Okay. Is it, Was it gold? It'll be crime if we pass it. I'd like to share it. Okay, quick. Visionary was in the visionary bucket and also head of sales. Yep. Pretty cool, huh? So good stuff from the room. You see how we keep it moving fast and we've got to move fast because there's so much ground to cover.
