Maintaining Mutual Respect

Short YouTube talk by Mark C. Winters (Rocket Fuel Ventures) about preserving mutual respect between business "visionaries" and "integrators." Winters urges both parties not to complain about their counterpart, frames the relationship as a partnership/marriage, gives integrators three options when feeling disrespected (fix it, tolerate it, or leave), and warns visionaries that integrators are scarce. Ends with three takeaways and a Rocket Fuel call-to-action (website, assessments, book).

Hi everybody, it's Mark C. Winters again. And today talking to you visionaries and integrators. We're talking about your relationship and I really want to talk to you today about having mutual respect. So it's absolutely essential that for both of you, you never say anything negative, you never complain to anybody else in the organization about your visionary or integrator counterpart. It's absolutely critical. Now you're different, you know that you're very, very different. So there will be tension. That's natural. And that tension is going to, at some point or another, it's going to build up an urge for you to have some kind of disrespect, to express some type of disrespect for your counterpart. My passionate plea to you is that you fight that urge. Okay, well, we're going to work out those issues in the same page meeting, alright? That's how we handle it now, visionaries, talking to you. The integrator is not your minion, they're not something less than you are, alright? It's a relationship, it's a form of a partnership, it's a form of a marriage. And we want to treat it with the level of respect that we would that important. Relationship integrators, now I'm talking to you. Integrity. If you're feeling disrespected by your visionary, you really have three choices. Number one, you can fix it, you can address it and we're going to address that through the interactions you're going to have in your same page meeting. Number two, you can deal with it, you can tolerate it. If you feel like the good that you're getting is greater than the bad and the friction that is caused by the disrespect you're feeling, you can just continue to tolerate it. Third choice you have is you can leave and you can go find a visionary that's out there that will treat you with the type of respect that you want and deserve. Alright? So now visionaries, I've got a little reminder and a warning for you. After hearing that, you need to remember the integrators are a scarce commodity in the world. So if you have a feeling that it's okay for you to treat them as something less than to treat them with this respect, then just recognize you might end up alone, you might end up back in that integrator seat yourself. So you need to decide and be aware and be honest with yourself about what's more important. Is it more important that you feed your power ego to treat them in that way or Is it more important that you have a powerful, powerful visionary integrator combination for your business? All right, now three key points to wrap this one up. It's a marriage. Respect each other. Treat each other just like you would that kind of important relationship. Number two, never say anything negative about your visionary integrator counterpart to anyone outside of your relationship. And number three, visionaries.
