Only 3 Choices

Short video by Mark C. Winters (Rocket Fuel Ventures) advising integrators on how to handle difficult relationships with their visionary counterparts. He presents three options: tolerate the situation, actively fix/change it by discussing and gaining commitment, or move on if change is impossible. The video closes with a call-to-action to visit Rocket Fuel resources (website, assessments, book).

Hi everybody, it's Mark C. Winters. So this last week I had an opportunity to talk to a lot of integrators about a lot of different things. And many of those integrators were telling me about issues that they were having with their visionary that were just really sort of difficult situations. And it sort of ran the gamut of different kinds of things. Everything from the visionary is doing end runs on me. They won't stop, the visionary won't commit to getting on the same page with me, or there's some sort of a, a lack of mutual respect. All different kinds of things. But when you boil it all down, like I told them, there are really only three choices for how you're going to resolve one of these difficult situations. So I want to talk you through them. So the first choice is for you just to tolerate the situation, accept that it's not going to change, and tolerate. When I talked to a lot of these integrators and would ask them about what they had done, what I found out was that many of them had not yet pushed it on the table with their visionary as an issue. So sort of by default they're tolerating it and that's sort of an accident. But I don't want you to just do that unconsciously. Just kind of put up with something that's really not right. But if you're going to choose to tolerate it, then please spare the rest of us and don't complain about it. You know, that's your choice. But don't drag the rest of us through your discomfort, alright? If you don't want to tolerate it, choice number two is for you to fix it or change it. Okay? And if you're going to fix it or change it, you've got to put it on the table with your visionary. You guys have to talk it through. You have to, you know, understand them, they have to understand you. And you have to initiate whatever kind of behavior change is going to be required to fix this difficult situation and get things moving back in the same direction. Okay? If you can't do that or don't want to do that, your third option, frankly, is to move on. And I, I hate to see this option happen. But every once in a while when there's a situation that you repeatedly discuss it and promises are made and broken and then made and broken again, you just can't seem to get it fixed and get it to stick because they won't commit, then at some point, life is simply too short and it becomes time to move on. Okay, so those are your three different options. It's simple, it's just not always easy to do. Alright, so to recap my three key points for today. Number one is I want you to understand what I what's going on. And number two, I want you to be understood. So I want you to put it on the table and decide if you're going to be able to resolve this and get commitment to make that change. Or number three, I want you to choose your path, one of those three options that I laid out. Pick which one you're going down and commit to it.
