Rocks vs Hurricanes

Mark C. Winters explains why hurricanes, not quarterly priorities called rocks, should drive business decisions. When major disruptions hit, leadership teams need to reset their goals instead of forcing through plans that no longer fit the changed landscape.

Hi, everybody, it's Mark C. Winters. And today I actually want to talk to you about hurricanes. You know, in the last few weeks, we've. Everybody on the news has seen all the devastation that's been going on with this series of hurricanes that we've been getting hit with. And I know I've got friends that have been impacted. I've watched clients, businesses be impacted. And I know, you know, many of you probably know somebody that was hit in some way, in fact, maybe even you or hit yourself. So first things first. Just want to take time out to, you know, send my heart, heartfelt wishes to all those folks that have been impacted and really, you know, wishing you a safe and speedy recovery to get. Get things back to. To where you want them to be. So we're thinking about you and just want to get that out there first. So from there, in addition to all the people, I want you to think today about the businesses that are impacted by an event of that magnitude. And that's what brings me to the topic of rocks today. So when you think about rocks, rocks are that most impactful initiative that you can focus on, that you think is going to help you get the company the best position that you can be in to achieve the outcomes that you want and move you closer to the vision that you've got for your business. Right? And when we make a rock, we're making a prediction about what those most important things are going to be and how far down the path we're going to be able to get in this quarter that we're working on. And from there, and it's about staying focused on those rocks. It's about helping each other get your rocks done together as a team. And it's about accountability, so helping each other stay accountable and feeling that accountability as a group, that gives us the best chance to get those things done. So through a normal quarter, you're going to have some storms, you're going to have some rain and some wind, but every once in a while, something comes along like these hurricanes that are just not your ordinary storm. They literally change the landscape that your business operates in. So you look at some of these pictures from, you know, from the Gulf, and you see what was done to some of these towns, some of these islands. I mean, it's a whole different world now. So if something like that happens in your business, whether it literally is a natural disaster like a hurricane or some other major shift, that just changes the game that you're playing in, I want you to understand that that is an exceptional Circumstance. So it's not the normal thing. Normal case we're trying to stay the course, we're trying to learn and do obviously the right thing for the business, but become better predictors by seeing how well what we predicted is actually what happens with our rocks. In this exceptional case, I want you to understand that maybe a different rule applies. You have to step back with your leadership team and take a good hard look at the new world you're living in and go, alright, this plan that we put together, is it still the right plan? Is it still the best plan? And if it's not, that's okay. You guys have to put your heads together, figure out what the new plan is, figure out what those new rocks are in a way that you can all look at it and go, yep, that's the best plan. If we can get that stuff done this quarter or next, whatever the new time cycle is, then we'll feel great about it and all stack your hands and lock arms and go into that quarter together and give yourself the best chance you can to get it done and make it happen. All right, so three key things to wrap this one up for this time. Number one, rocks are about predicting, predicting what's going to be most impactful and how far we can get in this quarter. But number two, there's some things you just can't predict. All right, so that leads us to number three, which is when that happens, the leadership team's got to reset and get the new plan together that they can go make happen. That's going to get you to where you want to go in this new situation, new world. Thanks for watching.
