The Wish List

Mark C. Winters describes a "wish list" technique where visionaries dump fears, ideas, and frustrations onto one list, then work with an integrator to sort items into short-term and long-term goals. Review it regularly in meetings until it becomes part of how you operate.

Hi, everybody, it's Mark C. Winners. And today I want to talk to you about something we call the wish list. So if you're looking for your perfect integrator or you've just got them on board and you're beginning the relationship, this is an awesome tool to help you make this thing work, make this thing really powerful. Actually, if you look in the book on page 140, we have an actual example of a visionary's wish list where they poured this stuff all out, they've got it down. So I want you to look at that as a reference and let me talk you through kind of what's going on there. So here's the situation. You've got 137 different things on your mind, right? So what we want you to do is just sit down and you're going to pour out every fear, every idea, every frustration, every loose end, everything that you're trying to get off your plate. Pour that stuff all out on this wish list. These are the things that you just wish would resolve, you wish would get off your plate, you wish would go away. And once you clear your head, you're just going to feel so much better that you've got those things out there. When your integrator is in place, you're going to sit down with your integrator and you're going to go over that list and you're going to begin to compartmentalize and go, okay, these are the short term things, these are the long term things, these are the things that we need to do right now or very soon. These things can wait until a little bit later and then you're going to build that reference into your rhythm of communication, into your same page meeting rhythm with your integrator. Keep going back to it, see how you're doing. What things are we knocking off the list? What things are the next things we need to be attacking on the list? And what you'll notice is over a period of months, you'll begin to just make that list a part of your DNA. It will become a very natural thing that you think about and bring to the set of priorities that you begin to work on. I want you to realize it's not all going to go away overnight. It might take, I don't know, a year, couple of years to work through that whole list. But eventually you'll get there and you'll begin to make big progress. And that's going to feel really, really good to you and it's going to be a lot of fun. So three key things I want you to take away from this one. First one is I want you to make a list. Get this stuff out of your head, get it down on paper. Second thing is I want you to work with the integrator to compartmentalize that list. What's the long term stuff, what's the short term stuff? And the third thing is I want you to begin to review that list in every same page meeting. And until it's absolutely embedded in the DNA of your integrator, come check us out on RocketFuelNow.com where you can join the list to get our Rocket Fuel insights, the latest thinking on visionaries and integrators.
