222: Becoming magnetic to your manifestations using self-love
16 Jan 2026 · 32 min
In this episode of the Canny Crystals podcast, host Mart Tweedy opens with personal family crises—a terminal liver tumor diagnosis for his uncle, his mother’s fall and injury, and the pressures of his son’s second birthday, a mortgage renewal and office move—to illustrate the emotional turbulence he’s navigating. He then pivots to the central teaching: self‑love as the foundational, energetic alignment that makes one magnetic to manifestations and abundance. Mart argues that self‑love is not merely indulgent self‑care but an internal relationship of safety, trust, and worth that shifts the energetic signal sent to the universe from “please give me this so I feel okay” to “I am already worthy and open to receiving.” He explores how self‑talk functions as a hidden gatekeeper, how chronic tension in the nervous system blocks reception, and how softening inner dialogue, raising personal standards, and allowing space (the “cup” metaphor) create a relaxed, receptive state. Practical tools include a daily affirmation (“This or something better”), mindful nervous‑system regulation, and the concept of “Magnetic Self‑Love,” a 14‑day guided challenge he promotes, with a priority‑list sign‑up link. The episode is interspersed with ad reads for Wayfair and a promo for Monica Reinagel’s Nutrition Diva podcast. The overall message is that cultivating genuine self‑love transforms identity, aligns the nervous system, and enables effortless manifestation.

My name is Mart Tweedy, I am your host. Welcome if you're brand new. Welcome if you've been listening a long, long time. This show's been nearly going for 5 years. Isn't that crazy? And I've just realized actually that this is episode 222. 222. And what's so weird is that I've seen 222 everywhere this week, which is an angel number. When I looked it up, it's all about balance, peace, harmony, and alignment, which is actually quite ironic. Because I've had a hell of a week, let me tell you, family-wise. Trigger warning here, I'm about to talk about cancer, so please do skip forward a couple of minutes if this is difficult for you to hear. But last weekend— actually, it was the weekend before— me uncle got took into hospital with a pain in his abdomen. He was subsequently sent for an MRI scan. Unfortunately, it revealed a large tumor in his liver. He was then told that he only has a few short weeks to live. Now, to put this into context, he's mid-60s, and I just think it's wild how quickly life has changed for him. I saw him just before Christmas, he was in good health, and then to suddenly just be told that you've got mere weeks to live, it's just really rocked me family. Now, he's got 5 small grandchildren. He's been writing them letters for once he's gone. He's had the Macmillan nurses round every day. He's even been given a hospital-style bed by them to make his last few weeks comfortable in his own home. He's been organizing his own funeral arrangements. Etc., etc., etc. It's just— I think it's really opened my eyes and it's made me think about the fact that we all just have this one life. We absolutely need to live it to the max because we just never know what's around the corner, do we? So then, not for this whole episode to be one giant sob story, by the way, but we're living with that. But then mi nana received a call to say that her only remaining brother has been taken into hospital with pneumonia. So my mam thought, let's go and visit him in hospital. So she took me nana. Me nana can walk, but she sometimes needs a stick. She's in her late 80s. So me mam dropped her off right at the hospital door at the entrance, and me mam took off to try and find a car parking space. She parked up her car, she got out the car, she went across the road, she fell in the middle of said road in front of oncoming traffic. She burst all her lips, bust her nose. She's really smashed her face off the ground. Now when this happened, it was pouring down with rain, so she just had to lie there. She couldn't get back up. Luckily, there was a lovely off-duty policewoman that was on her way to work that saw it all. She stopped, she helped me mam up off the road, she even took her home after she had her injuries looked at. So now me mam is out of action, she's all bruised with scabs all over her face as well. Eee, she's a right mess, let us tell ya. And she keeps on saying to us, eee, it's such a good job that those cars stopped in the rain in time, because if they'd have hit us I'd have been a goner. And I'm just like, Jesus Christ, man, what are you like? Like, what is happening to my little family at the moment? It's a lot to process and a lot to check in on everyone. It's also me little boy's second birthday this weekend, so I've been really busy arranging all that. Can you believe he's 2, by the way? It's 2 whole years since I recorded that very first episode of the pod with him crying in the background at 3 AM. Uh, me remortgage has just come up for renewal, so that needs doing. I'm moving office premises the weekend after next. Like, I seriously feel like my head's about to explode, if I'm honest. But one of the things that has kept me balanced, grounded, and calm through all of this is what we're going to be talking about today, and that's self-love, self-care, self-awareness, self-worth. All the selves, basically. I can't think of any more selves, but all of the selves. Now, I've been doing so much work around all of this because unless you've been living under a rock, you will know that I am running a self-love 14-day challenge in February leading up to Valentine's Day. Because let's face it, who needs a man when you've got yourself? You've got yourself. You've got to love yourself first. And if I'm honest, I am truly embodying self-love right now. So I thought I'd talk about that today because I think this is where so many people get stuck when it comes to manifestation and attracting abundance. So self-love has somehow been reduced to something indulgent, like it's all about bath bombs, candles, treating yourself, you know, bubble baths. Don't get us wrong, those things are lovely, but that's not what self-love actually is, and it's definitely not why self-love is so powerful when it comes to manifesting. Real self-love is energetic alignment. So it's the relationship that you have with yourself when nobody else is watching. It's also kind of like how safe you feel inside your own body. It's whether you trust yourself, whether you believe deep down that you matter,, and this all matters because manifestation doesn't respond to what you want, it responds to what you're embodying. That's why we do this embodiment work. When you're operating from a place of self-love, your energy shifts in a very subtle but quite profound way. You are no longer reaching out to the universe with that underlying feeling of, "Please give me this so I can feel okay." Okay, instead you're standing in quite a grounded sense of, "I'm already worthy. I'm open to receiving more." and that's a completely different signal that you are sending out to the universe. But I think when self-love is missing, manifestation often turns into hard effort. So it's hustling or overthinking, constantly checking for signs, trying to force those outcomes. But underneath all of that is usually a quiet belief that's saying, "I'm not enough yet," or, "Once this thing arrives, then I'll feel whole." So self-love just brings you back into wholeness right now, and when you are whole, you become magnetic. And this is why people who genuinely love and respect themselves, they often seem to attract opportunities, money, relationships, and let's be honest, ease, without appearing to try hard. It's not luck. It's not that they're doing manifestation better than you are. It's that their energy isn't tangled up in proving their self-worth. So they are not manifesting to fix themselves. They are manifesting from a place of self-connection. And that's the key difference. Now, this work, it is quite hard, okay? I could just say to you, Zlot, go away, do some self-care, come back in a week's time, and all your manifestations would have landed. It's not that easy, is it? It is not that easy. But when you truly love yourself, you move through the world differently. So you start to make decisions differently, you'll probably even start to speak differently, and you'll even hold yourself differently. And all of that is going to send out a very clear energetic message about what you are available fall. And this is why self-love isn't a nice extra in manifestation work. It is the foundation. Because no matter how many visualizations you do, how many affirmations you repeat, how many tools you use, how many crystals you use on a day-to-day basis, if your inner relationship with yourself is rooted in criticism, doubt, or conditional worth, that will always leak into your energy. And that's where the work really begins, because once you understand that self-love is alignment, it's not indulgence, it's alignment. You can then start to see how the way that you relate to yourself quietly shapes everything that you are trying to call in. Oh, sorry, I've got some fluff up me nose. Oh, oh my God, I bought myself a heated blanket this week. It is so fluffy. Me dogs just jumped— sorry, me dogs just jumped onto it and all this fluff came straight up it. Oh God, it's everywhere. It's gone straight into me face. Anyway, I want to talk about self-talk as well because The way you speak to yourself every single day. Once you understand that self-love is an internal relationship and not something external you do, the next layer becomes impossible to ignore. So your self-talk is like a constant background soundtrack to your life. Most of the time, you're probably not even consciously aware that you're doing it. Like, it's the comments that you make in your head when something goes wrong, or the tone that you use with yourself when you're tired or emotional or behind in your work. It's those little quiet moments of judgment that you pass on yourself without actually questioning them. But this is the thing, that inner dialogue, that is setting the ceiling for what you allow yourself to receive. So if your inner dialogue, that voice inside, if that is critical in any way, shape, or form, if it's dismissive, if it's constantly pointing out what you're doing wrong, it's going to create an energetic environment where abundance will struggle to land. Not because you're doing anything wrong, but because part of you just doesn't feel safe in receiving more. So think about it like this, like, if you wouldn't speak to a friend the way that you speak to yourself, why would the universe deliver experiences that require trust or expansion or openness into that internal space? So manifestation isn't just about asking, it's about allowing things to land as well. And I think self-talk is one of the biggest gatekeepers of allowance. So you might consciously want more money or more ease, or more love, or more freedom, whatever it is that you want. But if your inner voice is constantly saying things like, "I'm behind. I should be further along in me journey. I can't mess this up. People like me don't get things like that," then every single one of your desires is being filtered through self-doubt, and that's going to create friction for your manifestations to land. Not because what you want is wrong, but because your nervous system is receiving mixed messages. One part of you is reaching forward, another part of you is bracing, criticizing, and holding back. It's like putting one step forward, the other foot back, and expecting to still be moving forward. Self-love shows up here as awareness first. So it's not forcing those like positive affirmations over the top of a harsh inner voice. It's not pretending that you're confident when you're not. It's noticing how you speak to yourself, especially when things aren't going to plan. Because the moments when you're disappointed or you're tired or maybe even frustrated with something, they are the moments that reveal your true beliefs about yourself. And trust me when I say this, those beliefs are what shape what you feel worthy of receiving. So when you begin to soften that self-talk, something really important happens. You'll start to create internal safety. You'll start to become someone who can experience expansion without immediately self-sabotaging it. And ultimately, you'll stop questioning whether good things will last. You'll stop waiting for the other shoe to drop. And that internal safety is magnetic because abundance doesn't need you to be perfect. It doesn't need 100% perfection. It just needs you to be open and receptive. Receptivity grows in an environment where you're not constantly tearing yourself down, and this is why so many people experience breakthroughs in manifestation, not when they try harder, but when they become kinder to themselves, when they stop using self-criticism as motivation. When they stop believing that being hard on themselves will somehow make them more deserving, because it's actually doing the opposite. The way you speak to yourself teaches your subconscious what you believe you're allowed to have. Let that land, okay? Once things start to shift, you naturally will begin to notice something else changing as well. So it might be the standards that you hold, or the things that you tolerate in your life, the situations that you allow yourself to stay in. And that's where self-love begins to show up, not just internally, but in what you allow into your life. And this is where self-love starts to become very visible in your life, because when your inner relationship begins to soften and the way you speak to yourself changes, you naturally start to notice what no longer feels right. Not in a kind of dramatic way, but just in a quiet, grounded sense of clarity. You'll start to get clear on what it is that you really want. Your tolerance levels will start to shift. Things that you brushed off or justified or talked yourself into, they'll suddenly feel heavy. Conversations that drain you, that's another one. Situations where you are over-given. Work that underpays you. Relationships that keep you guessing. Patterns where you're always the one bending, fixing, or waiting on other people. Self-love will make these things harder to ignore because it's going to bring everything to the forefront of your mind, and it's going to bring everything crystal clear as well. So self-love really does make things harder to ignore, not because you become demanding or cold, but it's just because your nervous system no longer wants you to live in that constant contraction. When you respect yourself internally, your body will literally start giving you very clear signals about what is a no for you. And this is deeply linked into abundance, because abundance doesn't just respond to what you want. It responds to what you allow. So if you're consistently tolerating situations that don't match your worth, you are sending a message that says, "This is what I'm available for." Not consciously, but energetically. And the universe is going to listen to that. Self-love raises your standards without you having to force them. And then what do you think is going to happen then? What do you think will start to happen when you raise your standards? Because when you When you stop tolerating what is misaligned, you start to create space. Space for things that actually match you. And this is often the point where people start to feel uncomfortable because letting go of what you've been tolerating, that can feel like a loss before it feels like freedom. There can be a bit of a gap or a pause. It's kind of like a moment where you're no longer in that old pattern, but the new one hasn't fully arrived yet. Now, that space isn't emptiness. It's just alignment. It's kind of recalibrating. And abundance needs that space to move. So many people try to manifest more while still holding on to dynamics that drain them. But what self-love does here is it quietly breaks that pattern by saying, "I'm no longer available for what costs me my peace." And when that happens, life has to respond differently. And this is also where manifestation stops being about effort and it starts being about discernment instead. It's about recognizing what actually supports you versus what you've normalized because it felt familiar. And once you stop tolerating all the bullshit and what doesn't honor you, something else will start to shift as well. It's kind of like the urgency around manifestation will start to soften. You are no longer chasing outcomes to escape your current reality. You are choosing alignment because it feels better now. And from that place, the whole energy of manifestation will begin to change. And that kind of brings us on to what I want to talk about next, which is the energy of allowing. Because once you stop tolerating what drains you, the constant urge to chase or fix or to force your manifestations, it begins to loosen its grip. This is where a lot of people have that real light bulb moment. So many manifestation teachings, they unintentionally encourage that urgency. It's kind of like that idea that you need to be visualizing harder, you need to be affirming 6 times a day, you need to be checking your energy constantly, you need to be carrying a crystal around with you all day every day. No judgment. I'm not going to hold that against you. But it's like you need to be watching for signs every 5 minutes. People are on edge because of it. But underneath all of that is usually a quiet belief that says, "If this doesn't happen for me by the end of today, something's wrong. I'm not doing manifestation right." And that belief creates tension, and tension is the opposite of magnetism. How can you attract anything into your life when you've got that tension feeling inside? When you're chasing a manifestation, you're often not actually focused on the desire itself. You're just focused on the absence of it. You're focused on that gap between where you are right now and where you want to be. That gap, it's gonna feel so uncomfortable that the manifestation that you want will feel so far away from you that it's just gonna feel really uncomfortable. But yet self-love changes that dynamic completely. Once you've anchored yourself in self-love, your happiness and your sense of safety, they aren't outsourced to an outcome. You can still want things, you can still have goals and dreams, but you are no longer using those desires as proof of your worth or as a condition for feeling okay. And when you get that into your head, that shift is subtle, but it is so fucking powerful. So instead of saying to yourself like, "Oh, I'll feel better when X, Y, and Z happens," the energy starts to become more like, "I feel grounded now. I'm open to more." The universe responds very differently to those two states. When you're in self-love, you stop gripping so tightly. You stop asking from a place of panic. You stop needing that immediate reassurance that things are going to work out. And in that space, your energy starts to relax. What happens when your energy relaxes? Your nervous system relaxes. Relaxed energy is receptive energy. Now, I'm not saying just sit back, expect everything to fall into your lap, because that's not how it happens. But there is a very fine line between taking aligned action and sitting back and doing absolutely sweet F.A., okay? And this is why manifestations often show up when you least expect them. Not because you've given up, but because you have stopped clinging on to it. Now, think about this, right? If you went to the beach you picked up a handful of sand. You've got all of that sand cupped into your hand, okay? What happens to that sand when you grip it? You're going to naturally lose some of it out the side of your hands, or your fingers might become a little bit open where there's little gaps in between them. The sand might fall out. So when you actually open your hand from that grip, you've got less sand in your hand than when you had when you were just cupping it. That's what we need to do to our manifestations. We need to cup them, okay? We need to stop gripping onto what we want and stop clinging onto it for dear life, because that way you'll release the emotional charge around needing the outcome to arrive in order for you to be okay. And this doesn't mean becoming passive, okay? Like I said earlier, you don't just sit back. It just means trusting yourself enough to know that your life will not collapse if something takes time. It means knowing that you are safe even in that in-between section. Okay, so it's kind of like— and I use this example all the time— but it's kind of like ordering a pizza or ordering from Amazon or ordering online anywhere. You wouldn't constantly ring that place up every 5 minutes, would you, and say, is my order still en route? Is my order still on its way? Do you think that my order is going to come today? Is my order still coming? Sounds like one of my customers, to be totally honest. But that is almost like feeling desperate for your manifestations to land, isn't it? You are desperate. So self-love gives you that safety. It allows you to hold desire without that desperate feeling, to be able to want something without chasing it, or to visualize it without gripping onto it. And that changes the frequency that you are going to emit entirely. Now, there is an affirmation for this that I repeat all the time. I always visualize what I want, or, you know, do a little meditation about what I want. I see myself in the future living that life, feeling the feelings, feeling all the emotions, and then when I open my eyes, I just look up and I say something along the lines of, "This or something better." Now, that is me saying to myself, "I'm okay with that. I'm okay with this not coming exactly as I saw it in my visualisation, but this or something better." Now, one of my Academy members, Sally, she actually made me a thank you card. She made it herself. It's absolutely beautiful. I have it in my office as soon as I go in, on the wall, and it says on the front, "This or something better." I love that card so much, but I also love that affirmation so much. So thank you, Sally, for sending me that. I think she sent it about 2 or 3 years ago, and I have kept it all this time because I just love that affirmation. It honestly relaxes my nervous system so, so much. But see if that affirmation works for you. You might want to tweak it a little bit. You might have another one that makes your body feel safe. But like I say, it just allows you to hold your desires without that desperation. And from that place, manifestation is going to feel less like work and more like cooperation. You're no longer trying to bend reality to prove something about yourself. You're just allowing life to meet you exactly where you are. And when you are no longer chasing, something else becomes very clear as well: the state of your body and your nervous system. Because when your mindset shifts, your body might still be holding stress or urgency or that survival energy. But abundance responds just as much to how safe you feel as it does to what you think. And that's where self-love moves from the mind into the body. And this is where things start to really deepen, because this is the part that most people completely overlook. You can understand manifestation intellectually. You can be a rocket science and, you know, have a quantum physics degree. I don't know if rocket scientists have quantum physics degrees, I'm just surmising. "I'm not that brainy." You can have the right mindset, the right language, and the right intentions, but if your body is still living in a constant state of tension or urgency or survival, that abundance will always feel just slightly out of reach. Your nervous system is always communicating with the world around you. So when you are chronically stressed, or maybe you're overstimulated or running on adrenaline, your body is more focused on protection, not expansion. So it's starting to scan for problems. It's bracing itself in case something goes wrong. It's preparing for something to go wrong. And in that state, receiving can actually feel unsafe. Now, self-love is what teaches your body that it is allowed to soften, not through force, but through permission. So it's choosing rest without guilt. It's slowing down without self-judgment. It's letting yourself pause without immediately thinking that you should be doing more. Now, all those moments tell your nervous system that you're safe, you're supported, and you are not under threat. And that sense of safety is magnetic. Abundance flows way more easily into a system that isn't constantly on edge. Whether it be money, uh, opportunities, relationships, love, creativity, they all require a level of openness. So if your body is tight, your energy is tight, and if your energy is tight, things are going to struggle to land. This is why people can be doing all the right manifestation practices but still feel blocked. It's not a mindset issue, it's a regulation issue. Self-love becomes a nervous system practice here. You start listening to your body's cues instead of overriding them. You notice when you're pushing too hard. You stop treating exhaustion as a badge of honor. I do this all the time. I think yesterday I worked 17, 18 hours because I was doing like to work for Fran. I was also, um, going to see my family, and I felt so burnt out. But I was on my way home thinking, God, I'm like a super dad. I've done all this. I've still made time for me little boy. I was wearing that exhaustion as a badge of honor. But guess what? That ain't going to help me, is it? It's not going to help me. But something beautiful happens when your body begins to feel safer, when you allow that self-love in, when you nurture yourself and you look after your self-worth. You become more present, more intuitive, more responsive rather than reactive. You start to make decisions from clarity instead of fear. Or maybe you even stop trying to control every outcome because you trust yourself to handle whatever comes up. And that trust changes how you show up in the world. And from here, manifestation isn't about forcing results. It's about becoming someone who can hold them, someone who can receive without immediately bracing for loss or disappointment. Because honestly, once your nervous system is calmer and your body starts to feel safer, you'll start to see yourself differently. Not as someone who is chasing abundance, but as someone who is capable of receiving it. And that in itself is an identity shift. And that's what self-love helps you to do. It helps you to shift identity. Identity is everything in manifestation. Like I said earlier, you do not attract what you want. You attract what feels congruent with who you believe you are. And self-love gently updates that internal identity, not through affirmations that you have to convince yourself of, but through lived experience. So each time you rest when you need to, speak to yourself with kindness, honor that boundary, allow yourself some support. You're reinforcing a new message. You're saying, "I'm someone who matters. I am someone who is supported. I'm someone who can hold good things in life." and over time those messages will become your baseline, and from that baseline, abundance doesn't feel shocking or overwhelming. It's like you've got a leg up onto a high ledge. This is why some people struggle when things finally start going well. They'll manifest the money, or the relationship, or the opportunity, the job, but then they'll feel anxious, or they'll feel slightly undeserving, or maybe they'll be just waiting for it to disappear because that's what's always happened in the past. Their external reality has expanded faster than their identity has. Self-love closes that gap. It helps you to expand internally so that when more arrives in your life, you don't subconsciously push it away. You don't downplay it or sabotage it. You just allow it to settle inside. You'll start to become someone who expects good things, not because you're entitled, but because your nervous system and your self-concept are aligned with receiving. And this identity shift will absolutely change how you move through your days. You will no longer be trying to prove yourself. You'll be no longer hustling for validation. You'll be no longer trying to prove yourself to your friends and family. You'll be no longer measuring your worth by productivity or outcomes. You will simply be acting from self-respect rather than self-pressure. That's where manifestation will start to feel so much lighter for you. You won't be constantly trying to become someone else in order to receive. You'll just be embodying who you already are with more ease and trust. And then from there, the focus naturally turns to how this shows up in everyday life. Not in big breakthrough moments, but in those small consistent ways that you treat yourself. Because abundance isn't built on intensity, it is built on consistency. And that's where self-love really proves its power. So, once you do all this self-love internal work, it becomes clear that self-love was never meant to be something that you earn once your life looks a certain way that you want it to. It was never supposed to sit at the end of the journey as a reward for finally getting it right. Because self-love is the starting point. It's not the end point. It is the start. So many people unknowingly place it on hold. They'll tell themselves that they'll relax once the money's there, or they'll feel confident once your body changes. Or you'll feel secure once the relationship arrives, or you'll feel worthy once you've proven yourself. But manifestation doesn't work like that. Abundance doesn't create self-love. Self-love creates the conditions where abundance can meet you where you're at. When you practice self-love now, in the middle of uncertainty, in that in-between section, you are telling the universe something very clear. You are saying, "I trust myself." I'm safe with myself, and I don't need external validation to justify my existence. That message is powerful. Say it with me right now: I trust myself. I am safe with myself. I don't need external validation to justify my existence. It just removes the desperation from desire. It removes that pressure from the outcomes. And then from that place, manifestation becomes kind of like a natural extension of who you are, rather than something that you're chasing. So you'll stop asking life to prove that you're enough. You'll live life exactly as you already are. And when you live life from that place, the abundance will respond differently. It will feel lighter, steadier, more integrated. And from that, you won't just receive more, you're able to hold it longer. You're able to enjoy it and trust it as well. And that's why self-love isn't selfish.. It's not about withdrawing from the world, focusing on only yourself and not giving a shit about anyone else. It's about building such a strong internal foundation that what you create externally doesn't cost you your own inner peace. It's about being someone who can receive without guilt, or someone who can celebrate without fear. That's the real magnetism here, okay? It's not trying to be positive all the time. It's not forcing belief or chasing signs or timelines. It's just coming home to yourself over and over again and letting that be enough. Because when you treat yourself as worthy now, life will agree with you. And from that place, abundance will not feel like something that you're hoping for. It will start to feel like something that's already on its way to you. Okay, so before I wrap this up, I just want to say this: if you've been listening to this episode and maybe you've had that quiet inner nudge of, this is exactly what I need, Mart, or this is the piece of the puzzle that I've been missing, then I've created something specifically for you. Wayfair. Every style, every home. Acast powers the world's best podcasts. Here's a show that we recommend.
I'm Monica Reinagel, nutritionist, author, and host of the Nutrition Diva podcast. We dig into the questions that you are actually asking: if it's okay to drink coffee on an empty stomach, whether it's possible to retrain your sweet tooth, which ultra-processed foods you might actually want to include in your diet. We take a closer look at diet trends, fact-check sketchy claims, and track down the science so that you can feel more confident about what's on your plate. New episodes are released every Wednesday. Find Nutrition Diva on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you're listening, and be sure to follow or subscribe so you don't miss a single episode.
