In this clip, we're going to explore one of the most exciting skills that have emerged from psychology over the last few years. The skill of self actualization. It was Abraham Maslow who first described this and he described it as doing what you can do. In other words, he was talking about people's potential, that deep sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that you're in the right place at the right time, achieving what you're capable of achieving. Not being in that place inevitably leads to unhappiness and frustration. So really this is the challenge of carefully managing your energy. Self actualization is made up of three components. It's about passion, it's about balance, particularly about work, life balance. And then it's about achievement, drive. So passion, it gives us that sense of purpose. It's the energy that fuels our creativity and our courage. It lives somewhere between two very positive emotions, satisfaction and pleasure. So what are you passionate about? You remember in the book the Pursuit of Happiness where Will Smith plays the lead role. And it's about a guy called Gardner who gets a job at a stockbroking firm and drops his son off at a play school. And he lives on the street for a year with his two year old son. Nobody at work has a clue that he's homeless. He achieves remarkable success and today he's a multimillionaire and a philanthropist who actually launched a partnership with Nelson Mandela in South Africa. A journalist asked him once, what's the one thing that changed your life? You know what he said? He said it's passion. In fact, he said, you've got to be borderline fanatical about it. How do you know you find your passion? The journalist said. He said you've got to find something you love to do so much. You can't wait for the sun to rise, you can't to do it all over again. That's passion, work, life, balance. Well, that's the energy you require to make sure you're investing in the main areas of life. You know, the practical areas of your life, your physical resources, your money, your health, the physical aspects of your life. And then investing in your potential, your self development, your personal creativity, being continually focused on learning new things and developing yourself. And then there's the challenge of investing in the things you want to achieve, the productive you, your career, achieving financial success, you know, where are you working? Where do you want to be working? How much money do you need? All this getting it in balance is a key to renewing your energy and the fourth and final aspect of your life of course, involves your relationships, particularly with those people who are close to you, your social network, but also your intimate relationships. And the final skill involved in self actualization is that capacity to have a sense of achievement. What it is that you'd like to do with your life, the sorts of goals that you want to achieve to maximize your passion and energy. You should aim to create balance. Have clear goals towards which you're moving and giving them the attention they deserve. This is the surefire guarantee that your energies will continue to renew themselves in leadership.
