High Performance Life Secrets feat. James Cant

Matt Ryder talks with James Cant about high performance coaching for salespeople and business owners. They cover sleep, health tracking, and mental acuity as ways to boost sales and productivity. The focus is practical strategies for work-life balance and team culture.
Hey, guys. Welcome to another episode of Coffee is Foreclosures. We have a special guest star today, James Camp. Back again. Round two. Actually, our most downloaded episode ever is the With James.
Interesting.
How about that?
Yeah. So you can tell your mom to stop downloading it every week and playing it on loop, you know, so it's.
Actually the first time we've had someone come on for the. For a peak performance.
So.
Yeah.
Speaks.
Well, not just a one night stand. I knew there was more of that relationship.
A little more than that now, James.
Yeah, we are. We are. It's. It's gone past just the tip and now we're all the way down. So. Yeah, so I wanted to have James on. We were just on James's new podcast, which is great. So you can plug your podcast if you'd like James to try and get some of the audience to go over there. We highly recommend it.
High performance conversations.
High performance. Sweet. Obviously I was on there. James, unfortunately, was on there as well before you.
He asked me first.
It might not be with us first.
Yeah, yeah, good point.
Just to hype it up, you know, it's all right. You can. Sorry. You get there. Yeah. So I wanted to have James on. So I think in our, in our. In our last podcast, we kind of covered. You were doing some stuff with me and James, and then that's kind of escalated to where I think you're pretty much, you're probably coaching, I don't know, 30 to 50% of all the people within sales sniper. Yeah, I wanted to have you on and I guess just kind of talk about the stuff that we're going over with them and then give the people at home, the people listening, watching, some tips and tricks and some things that they can do in order to maintain a higher performance life. So we'll cue the intro.
If you listen to this podcast, you will make your first million within three years. I'm going to repeat that. You will make a million dollars within three years of first episode. You listen to. We don't want pikers. We're not here to save the manatees. We're here to make podcasts. You really want this? You listen and review.
Put that coffee down.
All right, James. So, yeah, thanks for coming. And let's just give everyone a rundown of kind of what it is you do. What's your. What's your elevator pitch? Give it to me.
I just make savages even more savage.
All right.
Sounds about right.
You're not a savage. You don't self proclaim as a savage. You can tune out now and we don't want you just leave forever.
No, I help dudes. I help dudes. And men and women perform at their absolute peak, both with life within their health and then at work as well. Funnily enough, when you're better off at home and better in your body, you always make more money, which is pretty cool.
Absolutely you do, man. And so I guess, like, you know, obviously this is a sales without a podcast. This is mainly for business owners and sales guys. Right. What do you see as, I guess, the most common, the common things that are affecting the overall performance of sales guys?
Boundaries 110%. You look how many dudes will work themselves. I mean, I had a chat with one of our sales guys just today. We got someone on. She's an absolute fucking savage. This chick is like an absolute weapon. She's working too much and she's not putting any time. Not working too much. Actually, I take that back because there is no such thing, in my opinion, as overworking. There's only under recovering or there's only where you're not taking enough time to actually allow yourself to recover from the amount that you're pulling from. I mean, use it analogous to training. If you're training 10 hours a day and then you're sleeping two hours a night, you're probably going to burn out. The same thing happens for work. For some reason, business people and salespeople like, think sick. I'm going to work 24 hours in a day. I'm going to be stressed as I'm going to eat absolutely atrociously. I'm going to spend no time with my wife and kids. And so hell's going to be a fight. And then I'm going to put like zero effort into looking after any. Anything health wise, but I'm going to be okay. It's like, it never works that way, does it?
That's the dream. Smash more coffee, make puns.
There's a time where it all bites you in the ass eventually, right?
It does.
I think we found that out pretty, pretty hard, you know.
How many times have you guys found it? I found it out about three times now.
I'm unbreakable. Okay, cool. So what are some strategies that you put in place for these guys? Like, you know, like, and I guess, like, where did you find out? Where did you find out that you had the superpower of being able to bring people back? What would they be looking for?
Sex drive.
Same thing.
Losing your sex drive.
Yes.
Ladies, and sex drive is number one because Whenever we're stressed, that sex drive goes away. If you're not having sex, if you don't want to. And you look with a lot of corporate women, there's actually in the US they're very proactive on this. They're actually prescribing all like different creams and gels and stuff like that for chicks. For women who can't get wet and they can't do that. It just doesn't work for them anymore. Anymore. It's like they're going through menopause, but they're in their 30s. In reality, they're just stressed as like really, really stressed and really strung out and not doing anything for it. So the sex drive just goes away.
Or you're just really ugly and don't do it for them. I found that problems.
You're attractive, you're beautiful, right? But in the end of the day, if we're losing our sex drive, that's like our number one marker. And then we can go even deeper from that. We can all do Oura rings. Like you guys have got these bad boys are amazing, like absolutely wonderful Oura rings, woot bands, those sorts of things. And then tracking your resting heart rate, your hrv, your sleep quality, sleep cycles, all the patterns, those sorts of things. If we track all of those, then we can predict when someone is going to be performing at their peak and versus when someone's not going to be.
Performing at their peak, I guess. Like what are some of the mental acuity things that happen to you and that we can relate back to a salesperson when you start to kind of tumble down the path and like get further and further away from optimal. Like what are the stuff that you're seeing when the guys that you're training.
How many deals will they lose if they.
I look at mine, so I pretty much. There's not many deals I miss these days. And then when I'm off, I'll be. I'll drop like 20, 30%. So it's like you can literally tell when somebody's struggling. Their close rates will go down because you do dumb on the phone, like get anxious, you'll get over eager, you won't be focused, you won't be present. Like one of the biggest keys for a salesperson is to be present in the conversation you're in. Because otherwise you're just a robot reading off a script. And that's the difference. Everyone can have the same script. I mean you look at all your guys like not everyone closes the same. And it's how well how engaged they can actually be in the conversation, how well can they learn those high level cues, how can they respond to it, all that sort of stuff. If you're stressed as fuck, if you're really anxious, if you're not sleeping well, if your IQ is going down, you can't think well, you're not going to be able to execute at a high level. Right?
So what are some things that you do to like, you know, the guys that listen to this, they're burned out sales reps, they're not making enough money, they're not making enough sleep. Like what are some, like what are some sort of hacks that we can do to. So I guess just kind of bring them back a little bit. Subs they can take or, you know, little shortcuts that would just make small things besides going out there and actually getting help with it.
First thing, set your f. Boundaries, right? Of what you're going to do, what you're not going to do. If you're burned out, you're not making enough money and you're not sleeping all at the same time, it's because you haven't set your boundaries well enough. Set them and what you're willing to accept and what you're not willing to accept. How many of them are you willing to work? So like when you go through it by setting your boundaries. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, okay, so let's say my boundary is I will not sleep any less than 4 hours per night or 6 hours per night or 8 hours. Like have your boundary. I will be in bed by 10pm, I will be in bed by midnight. Whatever it ends up being, right, set your boundaries. To start off with, I will only work 12 or 14 hours a day. Like whatever it ends up being so that you don't overwork yourself and so you don't get into the reason why you're in the problem. Get back into the reason why you're in this situation again. Next thing after that, in terms of supplements, hacks, little quick things we can do. Very, very first thing, do breath work. Okay. If you're feeling down, if you're feeling low, depressed, can't get up, you're just not working. Doing like what we call, it's a bistrica, it's like a fire breath. It's just really, really fast. Right? Let's do it right now. So what you do is you just breathe in and out through your nose really quick. So and if you think about it, think about like when you're running or when you're playing A height like playing sport or something like that. You breathe really, really quick. It's quite shallow, but it's very, very fast. What this will do is like immediately pick you up if you're feeling low or feeling a little bit. If you're finding it hard to sleep, if you're anxious, if you're stressed, the next thing you can look to use are things like supplements, like reishi. I'm a massive, massive fan of reishi mushrooms. They're wonderful. And then using things like theanine or gaba, you can supplement with those, and then they will make you like 10 times better if you're having issues with your memory. Lion's mane is also wonderful too.
Sweet. So just got my oura ring up.
Yep.
Right. And so let's just kind of. I just want to go through. Right. So if I have a look at yesterday. So it says my HRV is 83.
Yeah.
What does that mean?
That means that you're good. HIV is 83.
Yeah. So, like break down. Like, why does that mean that I'm good?
Okay. So heart rate variability is the variation in timing of certain ways within your heart. Don't worry too much about the sciencey stuff because it's technical and boring. What you need to know is that if that number hrv, if you're using an oura ring or any sort of band, whatever, you have your number. If your HRV is less than 50, no bueno.
All right.
It's not good. You need to get better than that. If you're above 50, you're going to be good. So we have things, we call it the 50 rule. If you're less than that, right? No. Good. If you're more than that.
Kind of like closer.
Yeah, totally.
I've never been below, like, I think like, 65 or something.
Yours is frustratingly good. Yeah.
When we started, we were on like 40, right?
Yeah. Yeah. You weren't good.
Oh, no.
Now I'm always in the 80s, man.
Totally.
What's. What's to go there? What would be the difference? Is that just like.
Well, you're not always in the 80s. Like that time where you were feeling like dog and you burnt out about three months ago. You were far from 80s. You were down to the 40s.
Was I?
Yeah. Welcome back to the time you vomited in a bucket. Are we allowed to talk about that?
Yeah, it's fine. Okay. But.
Okay, so what happened out in two weeks, bro? You're like, nah, nah, nah, nah, I'm fine. Neck minute vomiting in a bucket.
That's the time he was, like, lactating and kept crying as well. Yeah. Where am I? Yeah. Okay.
Not lactating if it comes from there, buddy. So just. I'm just gonna. I'll just have a look. Right, so it says sleep 74. That's good. Resting heart rate was 44 beats per minute. Right. So what would that indicate?
44 beats per minute?
Yeah.
Awesome. So if you have a resting heart in general. Super, super. Generally. But if you have a resting heart rate less than 50, you're doing pretty good. Like, it's really, really solid. So the 50 rule is, if your resting heart rate is less than 50 and your HIV is above 50, that's a really start. I'm not going to guarantee you're going to be perfect, but it's a good starting point.
Okay, there we go. That's a bad day. 69, right? 69. No bueno.
It's a good day, depending on how.
You look at it. That was the day that I spewed the other day. Didn't that speak to you on the phone?
Yeah, yeah.
And I had to cut you off because I had a little spewy Spew.
Yeah, you weren't too good.
There you go. Five hours of sleep. That's. That's. What does it f. Kids. Sorry.
Can someone just, like, acknowledge that he called it a spewy spew?
Okay, so. Because what I want to do is, like, that's the kind of stuff that we're looking for. Right? So if we're looking to be optimal, then these are the metrics that are sort of, as a baseline, good to track, because we can have a look day to day, and we can kind of see where we're at. And then if you're a sales guy out there, you can kind of see as it starts to drop down. So you can put a. You can put an intervention in before, because it's obviously probably not just going to go. It's going to be like a gradual decay. Right. So let's say. So you got an OURA ring. You guys are looking at all the stats every day, every week, whatever it is. And then from there, you kind of identify that someone's on a pretty steep decline. Well, like, what happens? What do you do?
Okay, so first of all, if someone's working with us and you're on a steep climb, we're like, why the are you not following the plan? Because if you follow the plan, you will never be on a steep decline. Simple as that. Next thing after that is you go straight to the Sleep. Like, what is happening with your sleep? Your sleep's a time for recovery. That's when these bad boys recharge. The HIV goes up. Your resting heart rate will come down. If you're sleeping really, really well, that's the first thing that you need to nail. So if you're feeling burnt out, if you're feeling anxious, if you're not closing well, if you're just doing heaps of dumb on the phone, you've got, like, brain fog. You just feel like you're not closing the way that you should be. Look at your sleep immediately, because that is where the bulk of your progress is going to be made. Everyone wants to be bigger, leaner, stronger, f smarter.
All right?
And everyone will take any fucking drug to make it happen, except they won't sleep more like, sleep is the one thing which is guaranteed to do all of those things. You just sleep better. Prioritize it.
Now, speaking of that, like, we had a couple of our guys that were on that decline, and that's why we brought you on to collaboratively coach them. But you also, like, run some metrics as our guys improved, and we matched that on our end with, like, close rates and income levels. Do you want to tell us a little bit about that?
So, yeah, totally. So when you see your biomarkers going down, your close rates will go down with them as well. The reason for that is because when you're on the phones, you will be. When you're on the phones. I mean, like, take your pick. If you had two states to be in when you took a call, if you were really well refreshed, super confident, super relaxed, super chilled out, very, very focused or poorly slept, feeling agitated, just anxious, bit jittery. Which one do you think you're going to close better on?
Right.
It's not like it's not that hard to predict which one's going to be better. And the interesting thing is, is that when you are more anxious, when you are less confident, when you aren't feeling as good, you will close more poorly, but you'll also collect less cash. Because if we look at, like, what a sale is, a sale is when somebody has enough belief and enough certainty in you to know that you can actually help them get what they want, the next level of certainty. So you need a certain amount of certainty to get a. But to get a PIF requires even more certainty from you. And so with that, you need to be at your A game to make sure that you collect an enormous amount of cash.
Yeah, I totally agree. I Think it's also like, it's really funny. Like, I have a look at. If I were to like, line up all the sort of business owners that I look at as really successful. They're all super fit. Look at her Mosi. I mean, Jesus.
Jacked. Jacked, Sirhant.
Jacked. You know what I mean? Me dad dreaded. Right? But no, but I'm serious though. Like, there is the real, like, you know, stronger body, strong of mind, right? Like, that's kind of where, you know. And it's so true. It's like if you. If you neglect your body wholesale, which I think a lot of. I think a lot of misguided young entrepreneurs and salespeople, like, they. They put themselves in these development holes trap where they're doing so much stuff that they're just like overloading their brains with. They're eating crap. They're not supplementing their body with any of the stuff that they need to know to feel good. And it's like they wonder why they close terrible. It's because they hate themselves, like, and they're treating themselves, like. And then they're just in this constant, well, if I'm not doing well, I need to develop more. To develop more. I've got to work harder. I need to work harder so I can develop more. And you know what I mean? And it's like, hey, man, just chill out. Go for a nice walk on the beach. Put your feet in the ground, take a breath. You'll probably come back more refreshed and you're pretty good about yourself. And then have a good night's sleep. And it makes a big difference. I know sleep for me is the key. Like when my kids are being like kids every now and then they go through those cycles where, like, they're not like, sleeping well, they're waking up or. My son got me up twice. Like, Mac, he thought it was a bee in his room. He woke me up. He's like, hey, there's a bee in my room. Like, no, that's not me. He's like, how do you know? I was like, bee sleep at night. He's like, ah, that makes sense. Like, that was at 5am So I was like, well, I'm awake now, you know, like, might as well go to work. Yeah, so, yeah, but I noticed, like, you know, if that happens over a period of a couple weeks, there is like a decline, then it's always on a Friday where it comes to a head. So on Fridays, I do coaching all day, I coach all day. I ask, answer Questions all day, which is very, very taxing on the brain, obviously. And then, I don't know, it's like a lactic acid buildup in the brain. That's probably not even the thing, but that's kind of the way that I describe it. And then it all just comes to a head, and my head explodes, Right? So that's when I know, like, I can feel it coming. But if I've had really good sleep, it's not affect. That doesn't affect me at all because I always eat healthy. That's never really an issue anymore. So, yeah, sleep, man. It's absolutely massive. Yeah. You've lost a ton of weight recently, though, Jimmy jam. Yeah.
Yeah. James has just written me a program, and I just listened to him and did it.
Wait a second. Wait a second.
What are you talking.
You hired a professional, you did what they said, and you got a result.
Yeah.
It's amazing how that works.
This is snake oil. This is some snake oil.
Yeah, Well, I mean, like. Yeah, like we spoke, we're both in the same trap where you. You get so caught up on your business that you want to put everything into it, and there comes an inherent guilt when you're not working on it, so you stop working on yourself. And it takes a while to realize that you're doing that. And then as soon as you do, you're like, oh, okay, him. Let's bring him in. He can slap us in the face and say, be better in here, here, here. Then you just go and do it. It's that easy, right?
I think it's the individualizing of the coaching as well and the treatment of everybody differently and figuring out the triggers. Like, one of the things that. When I used to have a. Real bad. Real bad habits around food, really bad, which I've gone over with James and all kind of stuff, which I'm a lot. A lot better with. Still not perfect, but, you know, 35 years of ingrained bad habits is. It takes a while to get rid of. But it was like, you have your do's and don'ts for the day. And then I would write. Had to write winner on one side of the mirror and loser on the other side. At the end of the day, if I did all the right things, I stood in the winner's column. If I didn't do the right thing, at the end of the day, I stood in the loser column. Because for me, that's a driver. For me is to be a winner. Right? Like, fucking. If you're not first, you're Last. Right. So, But I'm assuming that probably wouldn't be a good methodology for everybody. Some people might need a little bit of a softer approach. Right. But for me, that was good, you know, So I think, like, it gave me that black and white that I require. I'm an extremist by nature. Yeah, yeah.
And that's. That's the problem. Right. Is you take that extremism into every parts of your life and focus on that with that, with ignoring everything else. But for me, it was, like, about congruency. We sit here and talk about congruency all the time, and we're not being congruent in that one area of our life and decide to fix it. So with that being said, why did we hire James? Like, to coach our team, not us as individual. No, no, no. I mean, for the team. Right. So for those that don't know, we hired James for ourselves.
Yeah, we were.
So just go back, look at the last time we did the podcast, See the video.
You'll see a distinct difference.
But we also hired James to coach our entire team, at least a large majority of the team, and gave them the option to take us up on that, where we pitch in a significant portion of that. To me, that reason was we saw the benefits in ourselves and it helped with our close rates and everything like that, as well as for us, trying to be congruent, that's the next step of providing to our staff. So for you, Matt, was there any other reasons why we decided to hire James?
I think, like, you know, like me, my stance on team is like, the more money you throw into your team, the more dividends they produce. Right. Yeah. You know, which is why I just think it's money well spent. If you're spending money on people, I don't think it's frivolous, you know, and there's lots of money. Like, not only the stuff we do with James, but we have that. We have three retreats coming up. That's me. That's getting expensive.
Good hundred grand there.
Yeah. I haven't showed you all the bills.
Anyways, because I don't want to.
Anyway. Anyway, I'll sort that side of things out. But, you know, we have 37 people going to the retreat in the U.S. we have, like, you know, 15, 20 people going to the retreat in which James is coming to as well, if we're allowed to anyway, in November. And then we've got the UK guys as well. And, you know, the sales training that we provide these guys and, you know, helping paying half the bill that we do with James and all this kind of stuff, I can just think investing in your team is just. It's how you keep good people, you know? And like, there's not many organizations that are, like, led by one Savage and everybody else is like, commoditized and disposable.
There's no point. Sorry, okay. Off there. There's no point being a great leader if you got no one under you that's achieving the same thing because you can only grow as fast as yourself do. Like in reality.
Yeah, exactly. Like you look at car, someone like Cardone, right? Like Cardone, another super fit guy. Bezos. Jesus. Bezos is jacked jack these days, right?
Don't need to be jacked in space, though.
It's true. It's hard to stay jacked in space. Yeah. But, yeah, so, you know, you look at some. You look at some of these guys and Cardone, right, And he really invested heavily in his team. He gave equity to guys, he gave profit share to guys. He made sure that those key people that were all around him were heavily invested and in him and in the growth of the company. And the way that he did that was by heavily investing. And I think that that's really the key from my stake is to being surrounded by a lot of good people who are all driven towards a singular purpose and all remunerated and motivated by the same thing.
Can't go wrong. I'm curious though, James, like, what you've done with our team. Have you done that with, like, other teams and noticed, like, similar results? Like, what's that? Tell me about that.
Yeah, totally. We actually do it with a number of different guys. And it's funny because every single time, you know. You know, the craziest thing is that before we even work with somebody, when a team knows that they are getting, like, their bosses, like paying for a coach for them to not just make them better. Actually, here's another thing that's super interesting is that employers are often almost like expected to provide upskilling for work. But most of the time that doesn't mean as much as when you actually take a personal interest in somebody's life. And the coolest thing is that when an employee recognizes that the owner of a company or even management within a company gives a about them personally, not just about their productivity, not just their dollar value, all of a sudden the culture shifts, like, immediately. It is quite incredible how quickly it changes and how much. How thankful so many people in the team are for that, which then results in greater Productivity and more of a passion for the workplace that they're in. And then when we start working with them as well, you get an extra boost in productivity too, because they are functioning at a much, much higher level. We've worked with mining companies, we've worked with guys in sales. We've worked with guys multiple, like in gyms, worked in heaps of different spaces. And every single time it's the same. It's this first initial morale bump because, hey, I actually matter personally. Then after, there's a performance bump as well, which is sustained.
Yeah, I think it's huge. Like, if people know that you're willing to put your own money and invest in that, especially if it's in, like, I guess somewhat outside of the box means, like, you're not just getting them a sales trainer or getting them. You know what I mean? Like I said, a productivity coach coming in and someone who's like, hey, we value you as a human being as well as an employee or staff members, so we want you to be optimal. And then we know that from that you'll perform better, or at least you're in the best possible position to be able to perform that. So I think that's one of the reasons why we've been able to grow our team so effectively, especially the management team. And I think that putting money in things like James and his program has been a key reason why from a culture point of view, everything has stayed so tight. But also from a performance point of view, because all the guys are getting lanes. Right. All the guys are being held accountable. All the guys are working towards something. And they're not just working towards something to do with sales because that just makes boring people. They're actually working towards their health and their wellbeing and bettering themselves in multiple avenues, which I think is. I think is super important.
Yeah, yeah. I've seen a number of individuals achieve some pretty massive personal health cost.
Yeah. When you look at all the most successful sales guys within Sales Sniper, they're all jacked. Marco is absolutely jacked. Right. Shredded. You see Marco? He's huge.
Oh, yeah.
He's the big boy. Bill is super jacked. The guy's got like a 12 pack. Well, items is super fit. Does like, he's doing a marathon on the triathlon pretty soon and a bunch of other stuff. Like all the guys who are doing really well, they're old people. Road or people who really put an emphasis not only on the aesthetic, but also the health and performance side of things. I think a key driver of that is, we partner do that as part of the culture, which is why we have James on board. Yeah. Drives culture. Exactly, guys. I mean, yeah, I think if you're a sales guy and you listen to this or you're a business owner, first of all, James, where can they contact you? How do they get in touch for you to either help them personally or maybe help the team?
Yeah, totally. Best place is to join a group, High Performance Men. All right. If you're a chick, you can come through that as well and just mention that you came through here. So normally wouldn't be allowed in, but because you came through the sales number crew, we'll let you in just this once, but we'll chat on there. All right. And I'm happy to go through and answer any questions you have. Just go in and join that group, High Performance Men. Just find it on Facebook, put a.
Link in the description.
Yeah, we'll just drop a link in there. That's perfect. Right? And yeah, if you just reach out, I'm happy to chat with you and have help with you. Help you however I can.
Awesome. Cool. Well, yeah, I want you guys all to go also, where are your socials at, buddy? Instagram, YouTube, everything.
So just type in James Cant. C, A, N T. It's like the C word but with an A instead of a U. Easy to remember, right?
Yeah, that's why we call you Silent U, isn't it? Behind your back.
Yeah, that's fitting. But, yeah, no, just type that in. I'm on Facebook, James Cant. YouTube, James Cant. Instagram, James Cant, and even TikTok too. We've got a TikTok as well. So, yeah, you're actually saved in my.
