Special forces sniper: What’s it like?

Matt Ryder, a sniper with Australia's 2 Commando Regiment, talks about deployments, the bond with his unit, and how the military changed him. He covers the weight of the role, the brotherhood that forms under pressure, and what it takes to stay sharp in one of the world's most demanding jobs.
Hey, guys. What's up? Matt here. Welcome to episode of Just the Tip. Just for a minute. Let's just see how it feels. So what we're going to talk about today is a little bit of a random one, but what was life like in the army? So bear with me. This might be a little bit interesting. So see you on the inside. So for those of you who don't know, I was in the Australian military, I was in a special operations group called 2 Commando Regiment, and I was a sniper within that particular group. So my experience in the military in, you know, experiences may vary. As they say, a lot of people who are folding blankets, for those of you don't know, that's 10 blankets in the Army. Some people fold a blanket, some people cook food, some people shop people, some people patch people up. Okay? Everyone's got a different role. Every role is as important. My role was just much, much cooler than most. You know, just take that with a grain of salt that my experience is not like many other ones. So I was deployed a few times in the military. I went to places like the Middle east and Afghanistan, and I also went to places in Indonesia. I went on a few combat deployments, and that was my favorite part of the army, that and the camaraderie. So the military, I think, is a fantastic institution that there are a lot of problems with man management and there's a lot of problems within the greater military structure as it is. But in terms of, like, I met my best friends there and I'm still best friends with those people to this day because, you know, the friendships forged in iron and forged in battle are a lot stronger than other ones. And we've all managed to come out relatively physically, somewhat physically and mentally unscathed. And we all kind of get along really, really well. And there's a. There's a distinct kinship and brothership there. You know, anyone who's kind of like, lack discipline, I think is a good thing. People who come from really terrible circumstances, the military can kind of raise you up a lot. And then for me, I came from a relatively privileged background, you know, especially compared to most. And so for me, the military was a way for me to like, to test myself. I thought I was afraid. I was. I was like 18 years old and I was like, man, am I. I was like, am I a pussy? I was like, oh, no. And so I wanted to do the hardest thing that I could possibly think of, and that was join the military and then join Special Forces. And then that gave me kind of a Laser like focus. And it was one of the most rewarding processes that I've ever been through. It also taught me that, like, the journey is just as important as the destination. And so, you know, doing hard things and going and seeing horrible places, it gave me a lot of perspective. So, you know, my life in the military was pretty fantastic. I was deployed a lot. I didn't, you know, have much of a love life when I was in military because I was away all the time. And so I didn't really do that in a lot of my twenties. But what I did do was figure out who I am as a person. And I figured out that I'm fairly happy with who I am. Despite some of the comments that are in the comment section. I don't care. I'm pretty happy with me. And then military gave me the confidence to be able to say that and be able to, I think, be as good at selling as what I am because, like, I'm generally very, very happy with who I am as a person. I don't need validation for anybody else. That is sort of my experience in the military, kind of how it shaped me as a salesperson. This is only a short video. If you guys want Comment army down below, and maybe I'll do a much more in depth about my actual what I actually did in the army with some examples and videos and all that kind of good stuff that I can do to kind of give you guys a bit of an explainer. But Comment army down below if you want me to do that. If not, have a fantastic day. Don't forget to, like, subscribe. Hit notific button. Like, it's really right.
