Matthew Ryder explains why his company holds weekly "airing of grievances" calls where business partners argue openly. He believes constructive conflict and disagreement are essential to a healthy workplace culture.
If you guys don't fight in your company, if you don't argue, if you don't disagree, it means that you probably don't have a very good culture because you don't actually give about anything. Like me, my business partners, we argue all the time, which is not a bad thing. It's a good thing. It's even such a good thing, in fact, that every single week we have what's called the airing of grievances call. 30 minutes. I run it, and everyone gets. All the department heads get a chance to say how the other person is stuffing them around because it gets it out in the open. Because they're not messing you around on purpose. It's just that you haven't told them that that's annoying.
