Being 'Realistic' Is Killing Your Business (Become Delusional)

This YouTube transcript of Sabri Suby’s talk argues that extreme (“delusional”) self-belief is a necessary driver of outlier success. Suby presents five mechanisms by which such belief rewires behavior and outcomes: (1) creates public-facing certainty that attracts followers/clients; (2) rewires identity so willpower isn’t the primary driver; (3) filters out critics and external noise; (4) forces founders to reinvent themselves (new rituals/standards) because a company’s ceiling mirrors the founder’s self-image; and (5) leverages visualization/mental rehearsal to make imagined outcomes feel inevitable. The talk uses sports and business examples (Ilia Topuria, Conor McGregor, Michael Jordan, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos) and autobiographical practices (vision boards, recorded goals, daily rituals) to illustrate each point.

If you're realistic in business, you've already lost billionaires, world champions, and the outliers, they all have one thing in common. Delusional self belief. So insane that everyone thought they'd lost their minds. And by the end of this video, you'll know the five ways that delusional self belief rewires your brain for outlier success. Which brings us to point number one. Most people think that facts and logic convince others, well, this is wrong. People follow certainty. And a great story to illustrate this is Ilia Topuria. So he is a UFC fighter and he's moving up a weight class. He'd already knocked out three of the greatest champions in his weight class. He made the decision, okay, cool, I'm going up to the next weight class. Everyone thought, oh my God, this is a huge move. It could be the wrong move because you are so dominant in your division and to go from where you are to this next weight class is a big stretch. So what does he do on his debut fight in this weight class? Not only does he have so much self belief to actually say, hey, I'm gonna go out there and knock this guy out, but no, no, he doesn't stop there. He holds a photo shoot, right? And he has both belts, he's wearing both belts. He brings his wife in, his family. Then he basically has like a press conference where he releases those photos, like congratulating himself that he had already gone out there and won those two belts. And if that wasn't enough, then he organizes a dinner to celebrate his win with his closest family of friends. This is before the fight, like three or four nights before, he's actually gon and do the fight against a guy who is a dangerous individual, Charles Oliveira. And he goes into that fight with so much conviction and so much belief. I've never seen anybody do that. Everybody knew that Conor McGregor was a great shit talker. Ilia just took it to a whole nother level by having such insane self belief that he has the courage to announce to the entire world that he had already won the belt. Entering into the cage with someone that was already a very, very dangerous individual. And you can see that belief rubbed all over himself when he's walking out to the cage and he's got this big smile on his face, this big grin, and what do you know, he steps in there and he knocks this guy out within the first round in exactly the fashion that he said that he was going to do it in. And so people said to him, like, man, how can you have so Much conviction. How can you already think that you've won the fight? And he's like, I already won the fight in training camp. He know that he put in the reps to make it happen. But it doesn't just start by just being like, oh, I'm going to win, I'm going to win, and then not backing that up with actually doing the work. But it all starts with you having that belief and being so delusional that you know that you were capable of doing this and then having the actions to follow that. And it was the same thing for myself when I was broke, working in a dead end call center. And I would tell people like, yeah, I want to start a business. I want to be serving customers all over the world. People would laugh at me. Or if I was to tell them, okay, yeah, I want to be one of the youngest sharks on Shark Tank, they simply would have laughed at me and told me to be realistic. But here's the thing. You need to have so much belief in yourself that you become magnetic. And that is point number one. Delusional self belief creates certainty. But listen, unless you rewire your identity, then this certainty collapses the second that you face any type of resistance. Which brings us to point number two. Willpower doesn't work long term. Your self image always drags you back. You're always looking for motivation and for willpower to be the thing that just dawns on you, for you to go out there and get after it. You're going to be living a very difficult life. You want to be in a place where you don't need to constantly carrot and stick yourself about waiting for willpower, but you want to rewire your brain by having this self delusion. Take for instance, Conor McGregor, right? The dude was broke and on welfare and his, you know, girlfriend was supporting him. And he would speak into his mind. He knew that he would be raising the belt and he saw it so clearly in his mind that he had already achieved, achieved it. He was working a dead end plumbing job in absolute like freezing cold Ireland. But he had so much belief in himself. And then when he eventually broke out onto the ufc, no one had ever seen any kind of conviction around themselves like that. Like this guy was already speaking from his first fight like he was a world champion.
My dream is to be world champion, world lightweight champion in the ufc, have more money than I know what to do with, and have a great life for my kids, my grandkids, everyone in my family, everyone that's come up with me, that's my Dream. My dream is to be number one. Pretty much my goal is number one mma.
And while other people just see that as arrogance, that is not arrogance, it is programming his nervous system until his actions aligned with the picture in his head. Because your self image is the thermostat to your life, you are only going to build yourself up to the picture that you can perceive of yourself in your mind. You can't outperform your identity that you've accepted. If you're accepted where you are right now, how are you ever going to build beyond that? You first need to see it in your mind and then you will hold it in your hand. And the way that you do that is by changing your identity. Because once you change your identity, the results will follow. You need to change the way that you look at yourself in your mind and become that person now. And then the rest comes in place if you back it up with action. And that is point number two. Delusional self belief rewires your identity. But even a strong identity won't save you if you let outside noise control your reality. Which brings us to point number three. Most people collapse when doubters or critics appear. But the true visionaries, they don't even hear them. They don't even allow them to occupy any space in their mind. Take Steve Jobs for example. He distorted reality when they launched the iPhone. Or Elon Musk, he ignored, ridiculed about reusable roles. Or Bezos when he looked insane for promising the everything store online when nothing was even being sold at that point online. Because having locked in belief, it makes you immune to critics. Your conviction around the belief that you have around your idea, it simply silences all the naysayers out there. And that's what it is that you need. Because there are going to be so many people that tell you why your idea won't work. When you believe it down into the marrow of your bones, then that stuff is just noise. It's literally just background. Because haters become background noise. When your future feels inevitable, greatness requires living years ahead of public opinion. You have to believe it in yourself, you have to see it in your mind. And you have to know that you are going to will it into existence. Because you'll stop being tossed around by doubt when your belief is stronger than the noise. And that is point number three. Three, delusional belief filters out the noise. But here's the truth. Current version of yourself isn't capable of reaching this next level, because if they were, then you would already have reached it. Which brings Us to point number four. Every successful founder had to become the new character to lead at scale. They had to have new rituals, new posture, new standards. And their company grew only as much as they did. Because the lid on any business is the founder. And the reason for that is if they can't perceive a better reality to where than they are right now, their company is never going to grow to that level. All business problems, they are really just personal problems masquerading as business problems. So the first person that you need to work on is you. Self development is the number one thing that is going to grow a business because you are always limited by the founder. So when you're the founder of a business, reinvention isn't optional, it's mandatory. And in order for you to stay in love with the game, this is not something that you do once and then you forget. Look at all the greatest artists of all time that had the longest spanning careers. Like Madonna, she's constantly reinventing herself on every album. Or Jay Z. These are people that fell in love with the game and always worked on themselves and created a new identity and reworked themselves to keep them in the game to begin with. Because your company is capped at your self image. If you can't see a greater self image of yourself, then how are you going to build a business that's going to support that? You must consciously build the traits of your next level self. Think about what is the type of person that is capable of building a hundred million dollar business? What are their traits? What time do they wake up? When do they go to bed? What do they spend their days on? What is it that they outsource? How do they show up as a leader? And then you need to embody those traits and those habits and those characteristics now to then become that person. You don't become that person and then adopt those traits. That's not the way that it works. You first need to act as now and then that character will develop and will show up. And that is point number four, self invention. AKA you2.0. But even reinvention won't stick unless you learn how to mess with reality itself. Which brings us to point number five. Visualization isn't just woo woo rah rah, it's actual neuroscience. Take Michael Jordan, right? So he is known for saying that he shot more three pointers in his head than he did on the court. Or McGregor, who literally visualized his victories in such vivid details that he would go out before the fight in a press conference and he was like, I Feel him overreacting. He's gonna be completely tensed up. He's gonna throw the right hand, I'm gonna weave, I'm gonna dodge, and then I'm gonna throw the left hook. And that's exactly what he did. And he called himself Mystic Mac because not only would he predict the round that he would knock people out in, but he would predict exactly how he was gonna do it. And he just vis over and over and over again in his mind, where he literally brainwashed himself through visualization and he willed that into existence. And it's the same thing with businesses, founders, they saw billion dollar companies years before others did. That's the only way that you can go out there and do it. The brain doesn't know the difference between imagination and reality. In order for me to get to where it is that I am today, I literally had to brainwash myself. I would wake up every morning at 5am and I would go for a run and I would literally tell myself that I'm capable of doing it. I would have vision boards of all the things that I wanted to build and the things that I wanted to achieve. And I would literally look at that every single day. I would not only write down my goals in the morning, in the night, I would then record my goals, speaking as if I had already achieved them. I would put that on my phone and every day I would look at my vision board. I would listen to my goals. When I jumped in my car, they would play. When you go out into the world, you are going to basically just be brainwashed by everyday society and looking at all the normal things around you and what everybody's doing. Everything normal is wrong. So instead I wanted to control my environment and brainwash myself and indoctrinate myself with everything that I wanted to go out there and achieve. And I wanted to visualize and speak about it as if I'd already done it. And that is the hack. I printed out my vision boards. I laminated them, I put them in my shower, I put them in my bathroom. Everywhere that I went, I would see these things. The crazy thing is that I do this process every year, every two years, and I still have all of my old vision boards and every single thing on those things I have achieved. And at the time, they felt so outlandish and so wild. And it's freaky at how much you can achieve by just getting very, very clear on what that outcome looks like very, very clearly, down to the absolute intricate details. Because that's what no people will do. They'll be like, I want a better life. I want to make more money. I ask them, how much more money do you want to make? And if they tell me a number that is a round number, I know that they haven't really done this exercise they haven't visualized and really gone through to figure out what it's going to take, because they've taken that number from somebody else and they've planted it in their mind. Once you do this, and you know exactly what it's going to cost you to live the lifestyle that you want, that number will be precise. And then you need to think about all the things that you need to do and constantly visualize them in yourself in order to make them a reality. Because you don't wait for reality. You need to rehearse it until that reality has absolutely no choice but to catch up. That is point number five, messing with the fabric of reality. And if you like this video, you are absolutely gonna love this one I put together on how to brainwash yourself to make millions. Stay dangerous, take action, and I'll see you on the other side.
