Ego Manager Gets Owned... He Didn't Know What To Say

This YouTube video presents a real-world car-sales phone call (customer Tom, salesperson Kevin, manager Caleb) that Andy Elliott analyzes step-by-step. The transcript exposes common dealer mistakes — transactional framing, lack of qualification (no trade/financing questions), weak authority handling — and shows how a manager's ego/limited flexibility costs deals. The video alternates raw call audio with Andy's coaching interjections and closes with a CTA inviting viewers to train with him.

How long you been selling cars for? I've been in sales for 44 years. Wow.
These aren't role plays. These are real dealers with real objections. And I'm putting their calls to the test. Watch me break down who actually knows how to sell and who's just talking.
Not hungry to sell a car.
I was calling to get some information on a vehicle I saw on the Internet or your owner of your store heard you take this call. So is that a typo on the price? Well, I'll tell you what, buddy, I'm going dark mode.
Thank you for calling. Thank you for holding. This is Kevin. How may I help you?
Kevin, I was calling to get some information on a pre owned vehicle I saw on the Internet.
All right, and what is your name, sir?
Tom.
Tom, what vehicle are we looking for?
It's a 2020 Chevy Trailblazer. Would you like the stock number?
Okay, let me get over to my used inventory real quick. While I'm doing that, where are you calling in from, sir?
California.
Give me that stock number because I don't show one in stock.
Stock number. 29, 0 23A 3A.
And what year model is that?
2020 Chevy Trailblazer.
2020. And what color was it?
It's got 46, 000 miles.
46K miles.
It's crazy how people don't know their inventory anymore.
That stuck.
I mean, this guy walked into work to sell cars today. It's like a doctor trying to prescribe a prescription or a solution to solve a problem and he doesn't know what he has in his doctor bag.
Yes, sir. Yes, sir, we do have it.
Okay, great, man, thank you.
What can I do for you on that, sir?
Okay, so I see it listed at 25,000. 6 14. Is that correct?
Yes, sir.
Okay, great.
What is your five?
6:14. Yes, sir.
What's your best price that would be.
On a manager, sir? I could go to a manager, talk to you, see where we could be on it. But as a salesman, Internet price is the best I could offer you.
Let's just talk to the manager. I'll be happy to wait.
All right. Would you want to make an offer on that where I could take something to the manager?
Nope.
I think it'd be great to talk to him.
All right, if you give me just a minute, I will be right back to you.
Thank you so much.
Yes, sir.
Let's get us a freaking manager on the phone. I want to go to the top and see how much these managers are helping put these deals together. And let's See if these managers can relate with people, build a good relationship, or they're transactional and it's all about money. We're about to find out.
Hey, Tom, this is Kevin. Talked to the manager, and he said, in our market, that is absolutely lowest. In our market with the 46,000 miles, most everything that is here in this market in that 20, 20 range is they have like 80 to 80, 89,000 miles on it.
Okay.
Did he not want to talk to me?
I mean, I can ask him. I didn't know.
I thought that's what we.
I thought.
I thought that's what we were talking about.
Now I just went and talked to the manager himself. I mean, if you want to talk to him, that's fine.
Yeah, yeah, I'd love to talk to him. Because it sounds like you have no authority to discount anything. Am I right?
That is correct.
Okay, great. Let's. Let's. Let's talk to him.
All right. Hold on just a second. For me, sir.
Okay. This manager is not going to like me. The reason why he's not going to like me is because I'm making him get on the phone and he does not want to work before I get on the phone. This is an entitled ego manager. I can smell it through the phone. If I was literally this manager, and that was my salesman, and my salesman came to me and said, hey, I got a guy on the phone. He's ready to buy a vehicle. He wants to know what the best price is. I'm like, patch him through. Let me talk to him. Like, I'm on it. My job is to sell cars. Move the needle. Hey, Caleb.

Hey, Caleb, this is Tom. Are you one of the managers?
Yep.
Great.
I am the manager. What's going on, buddy?
Oh, okay. I was calling to get some information on. On a 2020 Chevy Blazer and I gave your salesperson really, really black rs. Yep. Really nice salesperson. I gave him the stock number. It was two 9 23A. And I was asking him what's your best price? And he said that the Internet price was your best price. And I said, obviously, you know, he doesn't have the authority to. To discount anything. So I thought I would talk to you.
Yep.
So we advertise our number one in our market. So that's the number one price in our market on that unit.
Okay. You know, well, there are some that are priced cheaper. It's not the best price in the market. I have access. So since it's. It's not the best priced in the market and you said it was.
Number one market is 142,000 miles. And then there's another one. 147. That's the only one in my market.
Well, no, I'm just looking at a 500 mile radius because I live in California.
So I can help you change it to 500.
Yeah, I can. I can fly anywhere.
So 155,000 miles. 150, 250, 122, 119 95, 1111-151351-00101, 109, 100, 113, 119. I'm not seeing any with that mileage on it.
Yeah, so cheaper. Yeah, so I found one with. Cool. Yeah. 42, 000 miles. It's a fresh trade. In just came in and they. And they have it listed at 24. 8. And so I wanted to see if you guys could match that price.
Let me see here.
42, 000 miles is it at drive time in Columbus, Georgia?
I'm not really sure. My wife's looking at it.
I got you the only 42,000 miles on his drive time in Columbus, Georgia, and they have it listed at 25, 295.
Yeah. So anyways, this is one that she found. She's been shopping for this. So I saw this one and I thought I would call on it real quick before we buy that one to give you a shot at our business.
I gotcha. I gotcha. You coming from California?
Yep.
Let me look here.
That's not much help. I can do 25. 4 on it.
Okay, well, it looks like I'll. I'll buy the one at 24. 8. I appreciate you guys. Thanks so much.
Cool. No problem, man. Have a good one.
Okay, now here's what I'll tell you guys. Number one, he didn't ask me if I had a trade in. I want you to notice this. He didn't ask me if I had a trade in. Right. He didn't ask me if I was financing the vehicle. He didn't ask me. Hey, Andy, let me ask you a question, okay? Like, I would be losing money if I match that price. I'm just going to be totally honest with you, okay? I got to figure out how to make this make sense somewhere. But I want to earn your business. I have extended warranty. Since this is a 2020 with 48,000 miles, I have some extended warranties. And I know that you know this is lower miles, but you want to make sure this vehicle is protected, like a new one. If I could get with my finance department and you'd be willing to finance with me, and I have some really good deals on some extended warranties. I think we could probably put this together some way somehow. Listen, you've called me. Clearly you really want this vehicle or you want to ask the salesperson to get me involved. Am I right? So I know this is something you really want, and if your wife loved the other one, you would have already bought it if you wanted it. But for some reason, it doesn't feel right. So now you're on the phone with me. So if this feels right and 24. Eight's the number, if that's what you're telling me the number is, I can't.
Sell it for that.
But maybe I might be able to tried to get close to matching that. If we can talk about some other areas so I can make it make sense to my company so I don't get in trouble for losing money on this. You know, I'm saying, I mean, I've been a manager for eight years. I want to be here for another eight. Does that make sense? And I don't want to lose my job over one. Over one deal. And I don't want to make a big deal over this. But you kind of are a big deal because you're a client and I want to make sure that you're happy. Can you work with me on this a little bit if I'll work with you. You know, could you imagine how far managers would get if they would work with customers like this? But they don't. They kept it strictly transactional.
And.
And he's one dimensional in the money. He forgot about the other four ways car dealerships can make money. This is why, again, car dealers are bleeding cash. They're totally transactional.
