How To Get Started In Sales

Sabri Suby says beginners should start at a company with a proven sales process and experienced team, not go solo. Work multiple roles across cold calling, phone, and face-to-face to build real skills before selling independently.

Okay, so today on HeySubree, I'm going to be answering James Bikos question. He said, hey, Sabri, what would you recommend to a beginner looking to improve their sales skill? Should you look for entry level positions where they provide training or try to sell your own services via cold calling? I'm interested in how you got started and how you improve your skills. So I got started working for someone, you know, when I was 16. I was calling up businesses and basically calling them to buy back their empty ink cartridges, then using those leads and calling them back and selling them those ink cartridges once they had been refilled. And you know, I personally think that going out and working for somebody where there's other people within that sales environment that you can look to and see how they're performing and pin yourself up against them, see what they're doing well, that you can borrow from and then if iterate to make it your own, right? And the reason that I say that is because typically somebody's got a business and they got a sales team. They one, have a proven sales process and two, it's kind of there's no questions around whether or not you're able to sell this product because there's already a team of people selling the product, right? Where if you're doing it completely by yourself and you're isolated, you're typically the person that's going to be the product creator and creating that product and then going out and selling it. And if you come up against, you know, it being very difficult, you might start to kind of have doubts and think, oh, the reason that people are not buying is purely because, you know, the product and that's the reason that they're not buying. And it's not about my sales pitch, but it's not about all the things that I'm doing, right? So typically you want to go to a company that's already got a sales team and you know, get your teeth cut, you know you're gonna get your face kicked in when you start with sales. I remember when I started when I was 16, it was like a cold, hard slap to the face of reality. This being on the front lines, calling up business owners that just didn't give a shit about me or anything. They just only cared about them themselves. So, you know, really that's where I would start. And then, you know, after you've done that, you know, for a while, and not just in one role, you got to do many different roles, you've got to sell, you know, everything on the spectrum from low price to high price. I recommend doing, you know, over the phone, face to face, knocking on doors, anything that's going to really test you in a lot of different sales environments. But you definitely want to go out there and depending on where you're at in your life, work for somebody else, get that experience, see the training that they provide, and really get your teeth cut on selling a wide variety of services in a wide variety of markets. And that will serve you for the rest of your life. That's my tip. Hey guys, if you enjoyed this video, make sure that you click the like button and subscribe.
