This Salesman Needs Fired!

This clip is from the YouTube video "This Salesman Needs Fired!" (uploaded by Nate Tilley). Andy Elliott role-plays/records a buyer calling a dealership and then critiques the salesperson, Josiah, for failing to convert the call into a sale or to probe for the buyer's needs. Key moments: the buyer asks about a 2018 Jeep Compass (stock U5078) listed at $8,900 with 137,898 miles; Josiah provides honest facts but fails to suggest alternatives among ~411 used vehicles on the lot. Andy (a sales coach with decades of experience) uses the call to illustrate common phone-handling mistakes and to promote his training services.

If your general manager or your owner of your store heard you take this call. How long you been selling cars for? I've been in sales for 44 years. Wow. These aren't role plays. These are real dealers with real objections. And I'm putting their calls to the test. Watch me break down who actually knows how to sell and who's just talking.
Not hungry to sell a car.
I was calling to get some information on a vehicle I saw on the Internet. Or your owner of your store heard you take this call. So is that a typo on the price? Well, tell you what, buddy, I'm going dark mode. Thank you for calling. Dealerships are burning their freaking phone departments to the ground. They're letting anybody who breathes take their phone calls and ruin their brands. It literally takes 20 years to build a reputation and one day to tear it down. If I was this dealer, I. I would be furious.
This is Josiah. May I help you?
Yeah, I was calling to get some information on a pre owned vehicle.
Sure. Which vehicle?
It's a 2018 Jeep Compass. So I'm going to tell him intentionally that the information's wrong and let's see how he handles it and if he can come back from it. Okay, this is a totally different call than I've done before.
What was the price tag on it? Was it the $8,900 one?
Yeah, 8,900.
Okay. What information would you like about it?
Okay, so it's a 2018 compass. ST number SC's U5078. And it's 8900 and I see the. The price or the miles at 37,898. Is that correct?
137. 898.
Okay. I thought it said it had 37,000 miles.
137. And that one, we are selling that one as is. It's a wholesale vehicle.
Okay, I got it. Watch. Let's see if you can convert me. Anything else?
Some notes on. Looks like the power sunroof does not work.
Okay, let's see if you can probably switch me to something that was lower miles because that's what I wanted. Does that make sense? Watch. Okay, Well, I appreciate it. I'm gonna look for something with less miles. Thank you so much.
All right, no problem.
Hey, sir. Sir. Hey, guys. Sorry to interrupt the video. Right now, for the first time ever, you can actually call me live. This year I'm going to change more people's lives. I'm going to help people make more money than they've ever made. Whether you're an individual and you personal training for yourself, or you're a business owner and you want to train your team or your company. You see the number on the screen right now? Call this number. You see it, guys, put in your phone, call it. Me and you will make a plan. We're going to crush it in 20, 26. So let's get back to the video, but call me now. Let's go. Sir.
Yeah, Sorry.
Oh, no, it's okay. And what was your name?
Josiah.
Oh, Josiah. Awesome. Let me ask you. Let me ask you a question. Do you guys have a lot of newer vehicles there with lower miles?
Newer vehicles, Lower miles? Yeah, Definitely. We got 411 used vehicles right now, so.
Okay.
And I have a little bit of everything.
Yeah, Well, I love it. Josiah, let me ask you a question. How long have you been selling for a year?
In a few months.
Okay. And when. When you help people. I reached out, I thought the vehicle had less than miles on it. So you were totally honest. You're like, hey, the vehicle, it has a messed up sunroof. It's got 137,000 miles. And I said, man, I want to stay with something with less miles. At that point you were like, okay, well, you know, have a great day. Do you think that we should have talked to them about vehicles that have 30 to 40,000 miles that are SUVs that you have on the lot?
Kind of.
Why didn't you?
Well, you asked about a specific vehicle, so I just wanted to provide the information that you were asking for.
So if somebody calls in, they're only. You're, you're. Can I ask a question? And by the way, I'm not being disrespectful. I'm still interested. But I just want to understand because I like to know a lot about the dealerships that I'm working with. Whenever I call and you have 411 or 400 plus, you know, pre owned vehicles in stock, and a lot of them have lower miles. And I'm wanting something with lower miles. If your general manager or your owner of your store heard you take this call and you had lower mile vehicles that you could have told me about, but you didn't see. Okay, guys, so you saw that right there. I'm gonna explain what happened. I call as a customer, I pretended to think that the vehicle actually had different miles on it. And he goes, oh, no, no, no, the miles are 138. And I go, okay, I thought they were 38,000. My bad. And then he goes, okay, well, you know, here's the notes on that car. And I said, yeah, I'm really wanting something with lower miles. At that point, he was hanging up the phone and getting off the call with me. This guy came into work today to sell cars. He's got 400 vehicles on his lot with lower miles. At what point should have said, you want lower miles? Are you kidding me? If you came in, this isn't the car I would sell to my mother. I'm gonna be totally honest. It's sold as is. But if you're wanting lower mile vehicles, I've got 400 of them in stock. Can you talk to me for a minute? What are you looking for? What are you replacing? Who's this vehicle going to be for? We're going to figure this out on this call right now. Did he do any of that? No. Dealerships are burning their freaking phone departments to the ground. They're letting anybody who breathes take their phone calls and ruin their brands. It literally takes 20 years to build a reputation and one day to tear it down. If I was this dealer, I would be furious. Hey, guys, thank you so much for watching the video. You're the true 1 percenter. How do I know that? Because most people, they never finish. What? Winners live where quitters quit. Most people didn't make it to the end, but you guys did.
