Nate Tilley coaches a used-car manager named Misha on handling a customer objection. The customer wants a 2022 Chevy Equinox under 50,000 miles but the car has 63,653. Okay, guys, I decided instead of asking for a salesperson this time, I'm going straight to the manager.
Thank you for holding. This is Misha. How may I help you?
Yeah, I was trying to get a hold of a used car manager.
Sure. What can I help you with, sir?
Is this you, Misha?
Yes, it is.
Great. I was calling to get some information on a 2022 Chevy Equinox. I'm actually about to walk into the finance department and purchase a vehicle, so I didn't want to go through a salesperson. I wanted to just try to talk to you for a minute and see if I could put this together.
Yeah, absolutely. I got it pulled up right in front of me. What would you like to know?
But what's the miles on that one?
You have 63.653ish.
I got it. Yeah. I was really wanting to stay under 50,000, so I don't know why I couldn't read the miles right. Well, I think I'll. I'll just get this one then.
Okay. Is. Was there something in particular you were looking for, or what was your kind of goal? Was it just an equinox for under 50,000 miles?
Yep. A 2022 Chevy Equinox. Love this color. I wanted to stay around 50,000 miles, but I noticed it's got 63 on it.
Gotcha. Okay. Well, if you change your mind, let me know.
Well, I appreciate it. How long have you been a manager there, Misha?
Well, I. Here 10 years ago, left, came back. I've been in the car business about 20 years.
Wow. Let me ask you a question real quick. When I said that the miles were too high, do you teach your team to overcome objections or to just let the customers go?
Well, the only reason, honestly, is because customers are always very kind of. They try to buy cars over the phone, which is almost impossible.
Can I give you a couple tips that I think will help you sell a lot more cars?
Yeah, absolutely.
Step one, if somebody's calling you, there's some. There's some interest. They got an itch. I want you to scratch it. If. If they didn't have an itch, they would have already bought the other car. And so I didn't do that. So I wanted you to pick up on that quickly. And then secondly, I only had a simple objection right away. You should say, hey, I totally understand. However, the vehicle that you're looking at with 50,000 miles right now, it's not your dream vehicle, and it's not perfect to you, even though the miles are right. Because it doesn't feel right. Because you're calling me. And so the vehicle that I have that's pulled up front, that's sitting outside, it might be 13,000 miles higher, which is two oil changes, which is nothing on a four year old vehic vehicle. Since you're across the street, you wouldn't have called me if you were absolutely certain you wanted to buy that one. But since there is some uncertainty, My name is Misha. I've been here for 20 years in the car business. And I understand when you spend the money, the car's yours. Why don't we do this? I'm gonna grab the keys. I'll meet you outside myself. No salesperson, just me. I'll hand you the keys, you take a peek at it, and if you don't want it, you go back and buy the car you want. But if you like this one, me. And you'll sit down and talk about it personally. Misha, if you would have done that, you would have closed this deal. You didn't come back to this dealership to let deals leave. You came back to this dealership to move the needle and break records. Am I right? I just told you how to do it. Have a blessed day. Love you. So I want to tell you guys something really quick. I see this all the time. We say salespeople are weak. And this is a really nice lady, but she is weak too. It's the sales team's job and the manager's job to give the clients reasons and excuses why they should say yes. And that wasn't done.
