What Kind Of Business Should You Start? (How To Choose Your Services)

Sabri Suby explains how to decide what service to package and sell, starting from ground zero. He recommends mining your own interests (Google/YouTube/Amazon history) to find passion-aligned ideas, then researching the market using Google (keywords), AdWords and organic search to inspect competitors’ service pages, pricing models, and common deliverables. He advises listing all possible deliverables in your vertical, defining a minimum viable offer people will pay for, and shopping competitors (calls/proposals) to identify gaps and practical packaging/pricing approaches.

By the end of that summer break, I had a sizable business on my hands and I decided to kind of drop out on college and really pursue this business. So in this video, what I'm really going to be covering is, you know, how do you find out what is the service that you're going to be packaging up and going out into your marketplace and selling? And we're really starting at ground zero. And what we really want to do is, you know, you want to look at your Google search history and look at the things that you, you're researching and that you're searching in your own personal time, that you naturally gravitate towards whether or not you're getting paid for this or not. And a great ways to do that is to go over to YouTube, have a look at what are the videos you're watching, what are the documentaries you're watching, where are you spending your time, and then going over to Amazon and seeing what are you spending your money on, what are the books that you're reading, what are the books that they're suggesting, and what categories are those books in? And this is a really great way to kind of see, you know, what are the things that you would do regardless of whether or not you're getting paid to do it, and things that you enjoy doing in your personal time that you could really package up, go out into that marketplace and passionately sell to your audience. For me, I really got my start when I was 17 years old and I got my first sales job. And I found very early on that that was a really big struggle for me. And then later on I really started to study it and I really started to read books on it and really started to become a master at sales. And then I went around traveling all over the world in different sales environments. And I was the top salesperson at every company that I ever worked for. And it was at that stage I started, I've really got a knack for this. I'm really enjoying it. I'm upskilling myself. This is the area that I want to get involved in. I returned back to Australia and I got a job at a marketing company that was actually selling Google AdWords at the time. And I'll never forget, I was on the phone with a prospect and I was selling Google AdWords. And the prospects asked me and said, look, I'm not interested in running ads. I just want to get my business listed on the left hand side of the page. And being an ambitious salesperson, I simply told them, yeah, look, we can arrange for that to happen. I got off the phone, I ran over to my manager, I told him what had just taken place, and he said, well, that's search engine optimization or SEO, and we don't offer that, so you better figure out how to do it. And figure it out I did. I went and really researched SEO and found out, you know, how to get a website ranking on Google and was then a service that we started selling at that company that I was working for. And after about two to three months of doing that, you know, I realized that there was certain things that I could do a lot better than the company that I was working for. And it was, you know, while I was at college, it was over a summer break where I kind of made the decision, hey, I'm gonna actually go out there and I'm gonna start my own business and I'm gonna start packaging up this service and selling it. I went on and did that, you know, after, you know, within a day or two, I had my first client. By the end of that summer break, you know, I had a sizable business on my hands and I decided to kind of drop out on college and really pursue this business thing. Now that was the way that I personally got started, you know, from my job and transitioned to starting my own consultancy business. However, you know, whether you're a health coach or doing well being, or you're an account, you know, you're a content marketer, it really doesn't matter. Once you've gone out and kind of really given some thought to, you know, and made a little list of the things that you find yourself spending your time on, and you think, okay, I want to be doing, you know, direct response copywriting, or, you know, I want to offer accountancy service or a wellbeing coach. And you kind of want to start to then research the market and find out what is your minimum viable offer. So what is the minimum offer that you could put together that people would be willing to pay you for? And the place that I recommend you start by doing this is if you're a wellness coach or a health coach, you really want to kind of jump onto Google. And that is kind of the big money or bullseye keyword in that market. If somebody was looking for a health coach or a wellness coach, that's the kind of keyword that they're going to be jumping onto Google and having a look for. So that's the first place that you want to start. You want to fire up Google, Google health coach in the area that you're operating in and start to kind of get a read on the market and find out what are people in that space doing, how are they packaging up their. Their services? You know, what are the different breaks down in those service delivery that they're really kind of offering and people are willing to spend money for? You want to bring up their website, click over to their services tab and kind of, you know, start to do a bit of research around these services and what they're offering. You want to have a look at maybe two of the people that are running Google AdWords. These guys are, you know, spending money on buying traffic and bringing them to their site. So they're going to have to be selling somebody in order to make that whole exercise profitable. Then you also want to look at, you know, the top three ranked in the organic listings and have a look at, okay, what are the services that they're doing? If it's a content writer, they might be doing content marketing, they might be doing blog posts, they might be putting together proposals for people and outlines of courses or whatever it may be, and start to go. This is a common trend that I see for all these writers. These are the services that they're kind of offering. Put them in a spreadsheet and really start to kind of begin to gather all of that data. The same with a wellness coach. You want to go over to their website, see if they're offering group training or health retreats or all the different services, and start to kind of get an idea of what is the first step that those companies are generally trying to do to engage a new client. And once you kind of have identified one or two competitors that you feel are doing good in that space, they're top on AdWords or topped organically, then you can start by, you know, simply giving them a call and start to shop the competition and see, you know, where are they gravitating towards naturally selling. You can even ask them for a proposal and have a look at, you know, what are the services, how they're charging for them, Is it an hourly rate, you know, is it a project fee? And really start to get an idea of where you feel that, you know, there is a kind of a gap in the market and how people are going out there and really selling these services and how they're packaging them up. Now that you've gone out into your marketplace and started to kind of get a little bit of a read of what the competition is doing in that space, what we clearly want to do now is write down a list of the different deliverables that you could sell in that service vertical. So if you're in the digital marketing space, you want to have a look at, you know, I could be selling Facebook ads, I could be doing funnel creation, SEO, Google AdWords, and really list out all the different things that a digital marketing consultant would sell. And regardless of whether or not you're clear of if that's something that you want to sell right now, simply all we want to be doing at this stage is having a look at all the different options and all the different things that people are selling in that space. Now you may be a wellness coach and in that instance, you may be looking at, I need to write, you know, I'm going to sell diet programs, exercise regimes, you know, mindset and meditation. I can do that through one on one calls. I could do that in a group training environment and just list out all those different things that, you know, wellness and health coaches are really selling in that space. And I want you at this stage not to be thinking, yeah, I'm definitely going to sell this or not. You're just taking a view on what that market is currently doing and how you could potentially go out there and if you wanted to sell these different services and then later, what we're good, what we can do is, is really dial down into what are those different services that everybody is selling that you would be comfortable with selling in the way that you want to gravitate towards.
