A short transcript excerpt from a YouTube video (creator Niraj Naik) discussing the legendary discovery of kambo (frog) medicine. The speakers recount a shamanic origin story—one shaman, after administering ayahuasca to diagnose a deadly illness afflicting his tribe, was led to the healing frog—and mention that roughly 44 Amazonian tribes (Brazil to Peru) have historically used the medicine.
How on earth they discover this? So some guy must have gone around licking totes or girl until they figured out that this, this is the one. How on earth would they know?
Now, the legend goes, and I think back in the 80s, there was something like 44, if I remember correctly, tribes documented as working with this medicine from Brazil to Peru. And they'd never communicated, so who knows how they knew? But basically, there's one tribe, I think it's the Katakina tribe of Brazil. But essentially they said that their shaman drank ayahuasca because his whole tribe was dying from some disease and he didn't know how to heal them. And then when ayahuasca was what showed him that the frog could heal the whole tribe? And then he went to get it and it did.
Wow. Amazing. Fascinating.
Well, a lot of the shamans you speak to in the Amazon directly talk to plants. They say that plants tell them. And that seems like so impossible to us now. But when you speak to enough people that we had, one shaman went to this amazing conference called Plant Consciousness in London about four years ago, and I think it runs every two years. And they had an amazing chat from the Yawanawa tribe, I believe. And he talked to the plants. And when he went away, he left his friends in charge of the plants he was looking after. And when he came back, they said, ah, your friend water. And he went to the friend, he's like, why didn't you water the plants? And he was like, how do you know I didn't watch the plants? He's like, well, the plants stopped me. It's like that.
