A short conversational excerpt from a YouTube interview (uploaded Sept 2, 2018) where Niraj Naik and another speaker discuss whether legalizing mushrooms would lead to misuse. The speaker argues psychedelics (mushrooms/Ayahuasca) are non-addictive, that most users function well and become more open-minded, but warns many users fail to ‘integrate’ experiences—leading to being ungrounded when ceremonies are frequent without embodiment practices.
So do you think if mushrooms got legalized that maybe people will go a bit insane with all this stuff?
Well, I don't think so really. They're non addictive number one. So I don't think there are many people that are like, well, I have to do mushrooms every weekend and like get on it. And I think if you just look at the cohort of people who take psychedelics.
Most of us function quite well in society. Most of us become more open minded and can integrate more complex and abstract ideas into and, and integrate those into our lives. I think that there is a fine line between people that use psychedelics and don't integrate them and then they can become quite ungrounded and like they haven't really brought that wisdom in, into their daily life and used embodiment practices to actually ground that in. And people who say sit in a few ceremonies and then spend a few years really working through what they understood and letting that really infiltrate their physical system. Because I've seen a lot of people who take a lot of psychedelics and especially now it's quite fashionable Ayahuasca New York everyone's sitting in a ceremony every other weekend. And that can be very ungrounding because by definition they take you off into these kind of ethereal realms. But then, yeah, when do they ground?
