Anne Dwane co-founded Village Global because traditional venture capital is a cottage industry that gets bottlenecked by how many boards one partner can sit on. She asked whether a VC firm could operate as a network instead. Village Global's answer: they don't have a network, they are the network.
If you could share like the founding story of Village Global, like what was that spark where you're like, you know what I want to do tomorrow? I'm going to start a venture firm. Like, how did that start?
Well, I think that a lot of venture has been a cottage industry. It matters who you know, and the firms are a little bit like hub and spoke systems, and that works very well. It just doesn't scale as much because Firms rapidly become GP constrained, right? They can only sit on so many boards or they can only back so many companies or something like that.
So we thought about, is there a way to have a network?
Because social and professional networks have changed so much of the way we interact. But Village Global doesn't think of ourselves as having a network. We think of ourselves as being a network.
