JLabs CEO Judy Estrin compares innovation ecosystems to biological ones, saying both need balance among three communities: research, product development, and end-users. Without all three working together, the system breaks down.
Chapters
In your book, you compare innovation to biological systems, which is ironic because my book also compares venture investing to biological systems. So can you elaborate on what key elements you believe are required for sustainable innovation?
So when I describe the innovation ecosystem, there are 3 broad communities because a biological ecosystem is made of diverse communities of organisms and then have these environmental factors that allow them to thrive. Biological ecosystems need to be in balance for them to continue to be healthy. And those communities in innovation are research, development, and application, certainly in innovation of technology. And so research is about discovery. Product is about turning those discoveries into products. And then application is the people who apply that technology.
