ItemLive subscription funnel review

Pete Ericson reviews ItemLive's subscription funnel and recommends ditching the hard countdown pop-up for a free-registration meter that lets readers access one or two extra articles. Registration feeds the email system and reduces friction at checkout, he explains, pointing to Salem Reporter as a working example.

Hey Mike and Tim, it's Pete from Leaky Paywall. I see the site is running well and I just thought I'd give you a little feedback. I know we've talked about some of this stuff in the past, but I thought you have some low hanging fruit to really help you build your email list and convert paying subscribers. So first of all, site looks good. I like your sticky subscribe bar and login message up top. That looks great. The one area that I think would be great to focus on right now is the way that you message your casual visitors on the first visit. So if I come into an article here, I get the pop up message and this is the article Countdown Nag that's creating this sort of hard block. And what I would recommend is to take remove the, in fact just remove the article Countdown Nag, you don't need it and install a free registration that will give readers, let's say maybe one or two extra articles per month in order to register and get them on your email list, which I can't remember if it's Mail Poet or what you landed on. So here's an example of how to do this. So the Salem Reporter here, they're out on the west coast, they have leaky paywall set up with a free registration flow. So when I read my, I think they're offering one free article per month on the meter and then they require a registration. And we've been testing the free registration messaging. This works really, really well. Essentially the main call to action here is that this story is free for you. It requires an email address and a password to register. And then what they're saying is that you're going to create a free account and get more of the Salem Reporter's top stories direct directly to your inbox. So you're going to get on the newsletter there. So this is the free registration. This can be sent to Mail Poet or mailchimp or wherever you, whatever email service you guys have landed on and as a benefit. And so I'll just, I'm just going to make up a dummy email address and hit submit here. Thank you for registering. It's unlocking the content. It's just a. And now I get to read this article. So this, this is a nice experience. If I were a real user, I'd get the welcome email from the free registration level and. And then off I go. Now the nice thing of course is when I finally decide to subscribe. Let's hit subscribe now. My information's already in here, so I can Yes, I can add my first name and last name but my email's already here. I go next and check out and that helps lower the friction of the transaction. So back to your site. I think this would work well. I know this would work really well for you. It would turbocharge your email list growth. And then once you have your free these free registered readers that are growing on your email list as you're sending them back to your website they're going to see the payment message over and over. So let's just go back, take a quick look at that so you can see what that looks like. So let's see here. I got a free article here. I don't know what the setting is for how many. Okay, looks like I get one or two, maybe two free articles after that. And then again a very simple message. You've reached. You've reached your subscriber only content upgrade your account that goes straight to the their landing page for subscriptions. It's very simple, just one choice and for you guys it would take you to the your subscribe page here where they can choose. So hopefully that's helpful. Please reach out if you want some assistance with this. We are here and hope things are good.
