Pete Ericson advises publishers on three essential priorities for digital publishing: make content findable in search (optimize for Google), make it shareable on social platforms to drive traffic and viral reach, and ensure content is readable on mobile devices. He notes that highly shared articles can dominate site traffic and that publishers should create follow-up content around successful themes.

So let's shift into what we believe is what you have to do today in the digital publishing space. We talked a little bit about how Google is attracted to good content and we know that the more an article is shared, the more traffic you will get, the higher Google will rank it. So it's, I look at the data on the back end, the Google Analytics and I see sometimes in the top 10, you know, a single article might make the top 10 of all your pages on a site because it's just went viral and social and it's getting found in Google and it's just never ending. Of course, as a publisher you probably want to create more articles based around whatever the theme was for that article. But, but this is the, this is the way it works today. So producing good content that's accessible through shareable and social and found in Google search is the key. So findable in search, shareable on social and readable on mobile. So searching, sharing, mobile, those are really the three things that have to happen with a publication today.
