Have you ever met someone with the same name as you, but they had a well less than stellar reputation? Dear friends, partners and investors, I want to share a little story about a name game that led to an exciting new chapter for my company. Have you ever met someone with the same name as you, but they had a well less than stellar reputation? Imagine people confusing you for that person. It's awkward, frustrating and a little hilarious, right? Well, I recently found myself in that very situation. This time it wasn't just my name on the line, it was my company. Imagine my shock when I discovered there real estate company in town operating under the same name. I've been using PRS properties. So naturally I looked them up and I was horrified to see their 2.5 star Google rating and a website that looked like it was stuck in the early 90s. It was like watching a slow motion train wreck. I immediately wanted to call my attorney, draft a cease and desist letter and bend the reputation I'd worked so hard to build. But then I discovered they had been in business since 1986. Yikes. They had the name first. And I was the one who unknowingly walked into this messy mix up. This got me thinking. While I love what PRs represented for me and my family, I needed a name that reflected not just who I am, but where my company is going. A name that truly captures the vision of what we are building. Not just a company, but a movement and thus asset Stream Properties. Why assets? Funny enough, the inspiration for the new name came from an unexpected place. I'm not typically a churchgoer, but a few years ago my wife and I attended a few services. One sermon in particular stuck with me. The pastor shared a story about his visit to the Dead Sea. It's the kind of place that gives off a vibe of stagnation, lifelessness, a body of water that doesn't flow, surrounded by barren land and devoid of life. He contrasted this with a flowing stream or river, which allows water to move freely in and out, creating life, beauty and abundance. The simple act of movement of water flowing brings life to plants, animals and entire ecosystems. That image hit home for me. It's a metaphor for life and business. When you keep good things like money, love and kindness trapped inside you, it creates a dead sea environment. But when you let those things flow through you, spreading wealth, opportunities and goodwill, it creates abundance, just like a flowing river. That's exactly what I want AssetStream to be. A river of opportunity where we not only create wealth for our investors, but also spread abundance to the people and communities around us. It's a lesson I learned the hard way. After seeing so many people lose everyone during the Great Recession, I promised myself I'd never rely on just one source of income, and that philosophy has been a cornerstone of how I run my businesses today.
