How using throwback photos can drive engagement

Local organisations can boost social media engagement by resharing throwback photos. Inverness City Bids posted a 1987 photo of the Proclaimers outside Charlie's Café and got over 420 engagements by tagging relevant people and businesses and encouraging followers to reminisce.

Today we're going to look at how throwbacks can drive engagement on social media. This is Inverness City Bids, and they found an old photo of the famous Scottish band the Proclaimers outside a hotspot, Charlie's Cafe, back in 1987, and they decided to share it. The photo, as you can see, was actually on the I Gigs Facebook page, as opposed to theirs, and they've posted it as an amazing photo from 1987 on their feed. Inverness City Bids clearly follow that and decided to share it because obviously it pertains to Inverness and it's a famous Scottish band. So all they've done is simply reshared the original post, which is a great way of reusing someone else's great content. And the content itself, obviously is designed to be nostalgic, fun, make people want to share it and engage with it, make friends want to tag friends and have a little walk down memory lane by the. Whether it's remembering the cafe or remembering the Proclaimers themselves, or just talking about maybe famous people being in Inverness, there's lots of different ways to look at it. It's all about celebrating heritage, people being proud of where they are, where they're from. It's so good. And it's had over 420 engagements, lots of shares and comments, which is what you would want with something like this. So it's really good going for an old photo. So make sure, if you use old photos of your high street, if you've got old photos of your place or old businesses or something iconic that's happened in your area, make sure you go and make sure you share it on social media, because people absolutely love taking a walk down memory lane and they've done a great job here about with tagging in the Proclaimers and tagging in the business as well. And I would tag in anyone else that would be around there too. Now, if I was these guys, I'd want to make sure that I find other accounts in the area to engage with, such as other businesses that have lots of social media engagement. Or it might be that I want to find old businesses that regularly share nostalgia, like maybe nightclubs or bars or old restaurants or even like the council, that sort of thing. So what you can do, you can go on to the maybe platform here. You can actually create a group, so you would put in all the businesses, or it might be local magazines or newspapers, things like that, that you want to regularly engage with and see if they've got good content. You add them all in here and then you would go down to that group. So I've just typed in a demo one here. You just click on there, and then you'd have the entire group there, all there. And then what will start coming up is all of the different businesses feeds. So it would be their Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and you just make sure you tag it so that it's local. And then what you can do is start going in and liking it, commenting on it. You can even turn it into your own post as well, so that you can reshare it to show that you're supporting businesses. And it also means that, just like they did with the Proclaimers one, you might get some really amazing new content you didn't have before that is designed to enhance your feeds.
