In this instructional video, Polly Barnfield (SPEAKER A) demonstrates how brands can boost social‑media engagement by resharing content that taps into their customers’ passions and nostalgia. Using Dundee‑based Dreamland Clothing as a case study, she shows how the brand repurposed a 2021 Leopard UK post that listed 1990s toys and trends, prompting followers—especially those who grew up in the 80s/90s—to tag friends, comment, and generate conversation. She emphasizes best practices such as crediting the original source, adding brand‑specific commentary, and replying to comments to extend reach. The presenter then walks through a content‑calendar/dashboard, explaining how to monitor a competitor’s posting frequency, platform mix, ad activity, and audience reaction to gain inspiration and benchmark performance. The video concludes with a call‑to‑action to contact support via a blue button.

Hi there. Today we're in Dundee and I want to look at how tapping into your customers passions and their interests can create better connection on social media. Now this is Dreamland Clothing. So they're an independent fashion business based up in Dundee and what they've done here is they've created. Sorry, they've taken a post from another account which is at the Leopard UK and this is from back in 2021 and they've reshared it as their own post so that they can really connect with their customers. Now, as a fashion business, they are, as you can see here, their customers are young and very fashion forward. Love a bit of color and love a bit of, you know, kind of quite different style. And what they've done here is they found a post that they know will either make a customer laugh or smile or at the very least it would. It would certainly be something that they're much more likely to tag a friend in because you immediately think, oh, wow, that's so me. So here is the nostalgic, nostalgic joys of growing up in the 90s. It's given you a list of all of the fun things that everybody who was maybe an 80s kid and growing up in the 90s would remember. Everything from microchips to Polly Pockets to Tamagotchis to padlock diaries and things like that. Now this is very fun, very girly, very feminine content. And anyone looking at this, if you are, as I said, you know, a child of the 90s or growing up in the 90s, you're going to immediately look at that and think, oh my goodness, remember Jelly Shoes or oh my goodness, remember Tammy Girl, you know, like that brand from back, back, back in the 90s. And you'll immediately want to tag in a friend because it is fun and it just makes you smile and it makes you laugh and it gets you talking. That is the epitome of excellent social content because as you can see here, people have tagged in their friends exactly what they've done. You know, best times ever here. It's really made somebody like, you know, have a chat and really, you know, go to town on their comments. And most of this happened in the 80s too. People are talking about, um, and even like other boutiques and things are, are enjoying it and they're commenting and there's other businesses are supporting it as well. Now any business can do this, but it's all about finding the right content that is going to connect with your customer. Now sharing this on say, you know, like a butcher's Web, a butcher's Instagram might not necessarily work, but sharing something that they, that they think will appeal to their demographic would. So it's all about just making sure that you're following lots of different accounts. You're always looking for things that you know, if you find it funny and you find it sweet or you, it makes you giggle and you are very similar to that. Your customers, for example, if it's a really sort of personalized business, then share it. There's nothing wrong with sharing it. So. But always make sure that you, if you are going to share it, make sure that you tag in or say that it's a reshare so that you're giving the other brand their due as well. On social media. But this to me, I mean they do it everywhere. There you go. The last. The only thing worse than stepping on Lego is stepping on one of these. Exactly. So it's all about throwbacks, it's all about creating content that makes people want to connect with you. And guess what? When they do this and then you tag it, they tag in all their friends. So these are all friends that might never have followed Dreamland before. They're much more likely to follow and engage because look, they've gone in and liked it. If I was Dreamland, I would also be going in and commenting saying, you know, like welcome or making a funny comment or something underneath each of these because again, it makes you, gives you more reach and it shows, it sparks a two way conversation between you as a brand and potential new audiences. Now if I was a business based in Dundee, I'd be wanting to look at what the, what Dreamland were doing. So I would go to my dashboard on maybe I would go to Content Calendar which here you can see all of your own content. And I'd want to go in and look at what Dreamland clothing, Dreamland Clothing we're doing, look at all of their other content. There we go. So what this does is it shows me all of my content for the last week and I can also then start looking at what they've been doing across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. And you can also see their ads as well, if they are indeed running any. But why would I want to do this? Well, it would give me inspiration. It lets me see what kind of posts they're doing, how often they post, where they post, what style it is and how well their posts are actually received. So it gives me a bit of inspiration. But then also if I'm a competitor then it helps me, it helps me monitor my progress versus theirs as well. If you've got any questions whatsoever, then please just click on the little blue button.
