Why tagging is so important on social media

Polly Barnfield, OBE, shows how tagging venues, people, and hashtags on social media multiplies reach and membership recruitment. Tag the location for mutual publicity, post frequently during events, and use platform tools to target local businesses by geography and category.

Today we're looking at why tagging is so important on social media when you're talking about an event. Now, this is the UK Material Handling association and they are. They basically support commercial and industrial equipment suppliers. And one of the things that they've done is they created an event and as you can see, they talked a lot about it on their Facebook page. So here it's a thought leadership event, so where they invited lots of other industry experts in to share their knowledge and experience for basically anybody who is part of their association, AKA their members. So what they've done is they've tagged in the place, which is obviously a really, really cool place to having it in the British Motor Museum, which naturally then you know, that would publicize British Motor Museum to the members who might then be interested in booking them again and vice versa. The British Motor Museum can then publicize the association as well. So it's really, really important to always tag in where you are when it comes to any kind of events because it means you're much more likely to get more traction and get a bit more reach and a bit more engagement and because of it. And then as you can see, one of the great things they've done is throughout the event, they've taken lots of photos, they have talked a lot about it, they've used some really strong hashtags here. Again, one of the things I probably would have done is tag. If they had anybody in there, you know, like someone like Tracy Follows, I would have maybe tagged her in. But otherwise, I think it's just a really, really good way of showing, as you can see more posts here, really, really good way of showing just how strong the event is. And of course they've done like a little call to action. So just make sure that if you're doing any kind of events, make sure you're always tagging in people always tagging in the place, even the location as well. Now, speaking of location, if I was these guys, one of the things I'd want to do is make sure I was engaging within my loc, would look at maybe where all my main members are based and I would want to engage within the location because it means that I'm coming up more to businesses within those areas and I might find other people who would be interested in becoming members. So I would go to engagement and so say I put Gillingham here, but it could be anywhere. And then what they do is they would toggle here to local and then here they would find all of the businesses that are getting any kind of engagement on social media within that place. And then it means that if they start liking them, they start commenting on them, they maybe share the post, they might go, oh, I didn't know that the, that trade body was there. Okay, I'll, I'll click on them and I'll go and find out a little bit more about them as well. And naturally, it's only going to help their reach anyway. And then the other thing that they can do is you can talk, you can change it by business category so they can decide they want to do it by professional services, for example, that kind of thing. So it means it'll whittle down and the likelihood of them being able to find the right businesses. Now, as always, if you've got any questions at all, click on the little blue button. We love to help.
