Las Vegas Best Cheap Eats Downtown?

Josh and Rachael Fillbrandt compare two Fremont Street hot dog spots: Dirt Dog's bacon-wrapped, chipotle mayo dog for $48 for two, versus American Coney's classic chili dog for $27 for four. American Coney wins on value and delivers the crisp snap and generous chili that makes a chili dog work.

Hey everybody, I'm Josh.
And I'm Rachael.
And we are down on Fremont tonight. We are gonna try out 2 of the more popular hot dog places to see which one is best.
That's right, it is loud and busy. It's a Friday night, so let's see what we can find to eat.
Let's go!
All right, so I'm going with the chili cheese dog. I still love the toasted bun, but it's almost like—
Hey, where are we at?
Oh, we're at Dirt Dog.
So we are starting at Dirt Dog. We're gonna do Dirt Dog and American Coney Island.
Uh, we actually just got to town about an hour ago, and I'm hungry, so I'm like trying to remember all the pieces. Anyhow, it's like a, um, Texas toast bun, but it's nicely toasted, but it still feels soft.
And it's a bacon-wrapped hot dog, I believe. Oh, I don't know about that part. Yeah, and then it's— I'll try to put the, uh, ingredients up, but I know it's chili, bacon, cheese, and chives. And chives.
Um, oh, there's an onion on here too. I— it's really hard to describe a hot dog, but it's got a nice crisp, it has a good flavor, it's hot. I like it.
It looks good.
It is. All right, Josh, where are we at? All right, we are at Dirt Dog.
And I'm doing the patty melt. So you can see there's, uh, french fries, cheese, bacon. I think that's— and there's like a chipotle, uh, sauce.
Chipotle mayo type thing on it.
Yeah.
And we're down here on Fremont Street eating some dinner on a busy Friday night.
That's a big hot dog.
It's a lot of toppings on that thing.
Yeah, I think this is definitely gonna be one of those where If you're not looking for like the classic hot dog, you want something more gourmet, over the top, this is definitely gonna be the place. There is a good spice or a little bit of heat to this one. I don't know if it's the chipotle sauce or if there's something in the hot dog.
You said this is the Patty Melt?
Yeah.
Okay.
I know it seems weird that it's called the Patty Melt and it really is just like cheese fries on it, but yeah, it tastes good.
Okay, it's Josh's turn to try the chili cheese dog. I'm gonna let him take a bite, but I do have a— I do have an opinion. So we'll see what he thinks after he eats it.
While I chew, you share your knowledge with them.
Yeah, I'll share my opinion while you take a bite. So as I mentioned, I got the chili cheese dog. I can taste the cheese on it. I can't taste the chili on it, so I'm a little disappointed in that piece because I want a chili dog that's like smothered in chili.
Yeah, I can, I can taste it, but— or I mean, I know it's there, but it's not overpowering at all. Um, I think it's because I think it's the bread. There's so much bread to it.
Yeah, because it just soaks it all up, and it's just not like— I'm used to a chili dog where you have to eat it with a fork and knife.
Now I will say I do like the bacon on it. It gives a very good crisp, as well as like the breading. It's a very good toast on it.
Yeah, it is a good toast.
Yeah, but, um, we'll see. I think American Coney can improve on this, hopefully.
Okay, my turn for the patty melt. I can tell you already I'm excited. I'm excited for the french fries, hoping they come through.
Yeah, I did think that the french fries were very good, and they definitely, um, kind of overtake it. It eats almost like more of a french fry, uh, sandwich than a hot dog. And I've never had a french fry sandwich, before you ask.
I was gonna ask you, where'd you get that at?
Yeah.
Uh, I think it's the chipotle mayo that I'm tasting most of.
Yeah, I thought the chipotle mayo was good. It's good.
The fries actually don't lose a crunch either.
No.
They're tasty.
Even though it definitely has a lot of flavor on it, a lot of sauce, but it stays crispy.
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out why it's called a patty melt. That doesn't make sense to me.
Yeah, leave a comment down below.
Yeah, if you understand that. But otherwise, I'm with Josh though. That bread is nicely toasted. I do like the bacon around it because it does give a nice snap to that hot dog. I think it's really good. Now, is it worth the money that we paid for it?
Yeah, now this was $48 after tip. We got those and we got 2 beers. So I mean, the price is a bit much. It is a bit much, um, and we are going to try to take that into account when we're talking about best ones. So we'll see. Have a great night. 2 orders, same way, 2 fries, 2 sprites. All right, all right, so here we are.
We are now at American Coney at the D.
At the D.
This place is open 24 hours a day. It is smothered in chili.
And we ended up getting 4 of them. It was about $23 before tip, so $26, $27 I think was after tip. We ended up with 4. This does not include the drinks, so, you know, that was about $17, I believe, in drinks.
Now I'll tell you, the hot dog is smaller and the bun is truly just a basic It's a basic hot dog bun, but it's exactly what I want in a chili dog. Um, the cheese is nice and melty, the onions are nice and fresh. The hot dog actually has a very nice crisp to it, which I was shocked about.
Now the—
it's messy, which I love. That's what I wanted with a chili dog.
The regular order of the Coney dog does come with mustard on it, but I did not want the mustard on there.
Yeah, thank you for not getting that.
Yeah, so if you're gonna order the basic one, you're gonna get that. We did it with cheese though.
And that's delicious.
All right, I can't wait to dig That's so good. All right, my turn. Yep, it looks just basic. It's got a nice, not runny but not thick, uh, chili on it.
But you can tell there's chili on it. That's what I really like about it is you can tell there's chili on that. And it looks like shredded cheese, not like a Cheez Whiz.
It is.
And it melts nicely on with that hot chili. And there is— what do you think?
There's a lot more snap and bite to the dog than I expected there to be. Um, yeah, it's, it's nice, basic. It's a simple But it really is what you're going for if you're going for a simple chili dog.
I was actually thinking to myself as you were biting that, I think it has more of a snap than the other ones did, and they were bigger hot dogs with that bacon on them. But this does have a better snap on that hot dog. Again, there's only one option. I mean, you get a hot dog, I guess you could mix it up 4 ways. You get a chili dog or a chili dog with mustard.
They also have gyros.
Oh, okay.
Um, they have a loose burger, which I was assuming—
What's a loose burger?
I don't know, actually. I was assuming it was like a sloppy joe. And also they have french fries.
Okay.
But we're in a hot dog mood.
That's right.
Thank you. All right, we just wrapped up over here at American Coney. We did try Dirt Dog right before it.
That's right.
Um, what'd you think about those 2?
I'm gonna say it, for the price I want American Coney. It's a chili dog. If you're simply looking for a chili dog, that is. Yeah, um, it's a chili dog. It's simple, but it is delicious, and it's fresh and still hot. It does not take them but like 3 minutes. I think you were in line. You were. It was super fast.
And they serve it right up. Whereas Dirt Dog, we had to wait a little while.
We did.
Um, we sat outside for probably about 5 to 10 minutes. Um, it is more of a gourmet. It does have a lot more stuff on it, but it also costs 2 to 3 times the cost. And it's getting really loud here in the D. It is.
So, okay, so your vote would also be for American Coney?
Typically I would go American Coney. Otherwise, I mean, there would be moments where I'd like to have Dirt Dog because it does have a bit more to it.
I agree, and there's more options.
There is, but for the most part, I like American Coney as well.
That's right.
