How is Mentoring different from Coaching? #mentorcloud #mentoring #coaching #wisdom #experience

Dr. Ravi Gundlapalli distinguishes coaching from mentoring: coaching draws out someone's inherent genius, while mentoring transfers wisdom from someone who has lived through it. The two often overlap and work together to unlock potential.

It is actually, you know, it's an excellent question. And there is a big confusion. You know, most people understand coaching because they watch sports and, you know, they talk about sports coaching and stuff. So in talking to one of my good friends, you know, Becky, she worked at Google, so she and I had a very nice conversation once, you know, and the way I defined it, out of the conversation with Becky, who is an amazing coach, when you tap into somebody's genius, you call it coaching. So when you extract the superpower of an individual outside out of them, that's coaching. That's what happens in sports. That's what happens in leadership, where the person is who he or she is, and somebody is trying to extract the true genius out of them. So when you tap into somebody's genius, it's coaching. But when you tap into somebody's wisdom, it is mentoring. So when you mentor someone, you have to have the experience of having been there, done that. Like if somebody tells me, ravi, how do you do an mba? I don't have an mba. I can give advice, but I may not be able to. But if somebody says, ravi, how do you do a PhD, I've done it. I know exactly how to take the classes, how to apply for your for your comprehensive exams, how to write papers, how to get published, all of that. So transferring experiential wisdom to somebody is mentoring. So in few words, when you tap into somebody's genius, coaching, when you tap into somebody's wisdom, mentoring, and sometimes same interaction, you can be both. Like when I'm talking to you, I can be really figuring out where does your true strengths exist? I'm acting as a coach. But then once I know your true strengths and I see that there are areas where I can help you, how do I then help you maximize those strengths? Based on an experience I had. Now I'm mentoring you. So it is essentially a spectrum when it comes to unleashing the other human's potential.
Sam.
