How to select a Mentee #mentorcloud #mentoring #coaching #wisdom #experience

Dr. Ravi Gundlapalli says mentors should guard their time by choosing mentees who show hunger and seriousness. Look for people who follow through on initial requests, demonstrate integrity, actually listen, and will act on advice rather than just collect it.

How should mentors select their mentees? Now, I have a whole chapter in my book, actually, so I would refer you to the Art of Mentoring book. But you know, mentors are also human beings and they also have 24 hours in a day. They have challenges in their work, work pressures, family pleasures. So their time is very precious. So when I choose a mentee, I look at the hunger of the mentee. Are they casually making a request or are they serious? Sometimes when they request me the first time, I tend to test and see how serious they are. In my early days, I would go offer help to anybody and everybody that asked. Very soon I realized only a small percentage of them are actually serious. So when you look at your available mentoring time as gold, as irreplaceable, because time is irreplaceable. This minute we are spending together is gone for everybody in the world. So who do you spend this gold with? Are those people who consider your time as gold, who consider this as a very serious thing that they're going to do so that you feel good, that your time spent is actually being taken seriously and they will do something with it and they'll come back and tell you how it impacted them. So study your mentee's sincerity, integrity, seriousness, intent to listen, and are they willing to take action and are they going to continue to keep you updated so that you feel good that you have spent your golden time on someone who is taking this seriously?
