What Makes a Good Mentor #mentorcloud #growth #guidance #thoughts #mentor #wisdom

Dr. Ravi Gundlapalli explains what makes a good mentor: begin by being a good human, then ‘share and care’—offer wisdom selectively with compassion, active listening, and non-judgmental support. A mentor’s practical role is to expand possibilities for mentees by opening doors in their network (illustrated by an anecdote about a blind mentee who wanted to study at MIT).

What makes a good mentor is first to be a good human being, because sharing and giving and helping other people is a very fundamental human trait. So you have to be, first of all, truly caring about other people around you, whether it's in your family, in your society, or in your organization. So start with being a good human being. I define the role of a mentor is share and care. So share your wisdom, but not to the whole world, but with a sense of care for someone that you really want to see that human being flourish and grow and become successful. And what makes a great mentor is also being a good listener and being compassionate, being.
You know, open and not being judgmental. Know that you were once in a situation when you had all the challenges just because you climbed on a ladder. And now you're on. You're on the roof. You know, don't ignore the steps you took on the. On the ladder, as I say. Right? So let your people be vulnerable, because you were once vulnerable at some point. So that's what creates a. A sense of trust and a sense of comfort for your mentees. And most importantly is also being a good mentor is not about showing off your intellectual superiority. It is really about opening doors. It is about expanding possibilities. So as a great mentor, your role is to open up the world to your mentees. See who in your network can directly add value to your mentee. I'll give you an example. One of my mentees during this transformation when I started Mentor Cloud is actually blind. So he came up to me and he said he wants to study in mit. And now I've never mentored a blind student. I don't even know what being blind is, because we're all sighted. We're privileged. But very soon, I realized in my network, there were people who were donating to causes related to blindness.
There were people who would actually fund.
Academics related to blind people. So until this mentee came, these people in my network were sort of irrelevant to me. So when I opened those networks of mine to my mentee, his whole world changed. So opening up possibilities, creating opportunities, is all about being a good mentor.
