Marketing is the API between what a company builds and what customers want. It's not manipulation but a set of functions like advertising, positioning, and packaging that expose products to the market. Technologists who treat it systematically, like any other interface, make better products and business decisions.

Marketing is an API. I find that a lot of my friends are technologists and they kind of have a hard time thinking about marketing. They think marketing may be something that only people of lower ethical quality do in order to trick customers into buying products or whatever. And in fact, what I find is that marketing is about the interface between supply and the demand of the customer. And it's not like, that's what advertising is, or that's what promotion is. That's what marketing is. When you think about advertising, you think about promotion, you think about like the things you, you go out into the world to do. You also think about like how you package and how you position and frankly even how you build your product. These things are important because marketing is an API. When you think of it as an API, you think the market is another service, you will start thinking about this correctly and start making better decisions that will allow your business and your product to be more successful.
