Weekly calls with domain experts work best when both people learn from each other. The speaker feels noticeably smarter after each conversation and finds the experts ask them questions too, turning mentorship into genuine friendship.
Chapters
Embrace mentorship through friendship. I have a number of calls that I do every week with people who are experts in their domains, and I learn a tremendous amount from each of them, and they each imbue me with expertise from their fields, and that allows me to grow a great deal, and that allows me to keep up that growth mindset as well, because I will talk to them and I will be dumber than them in their domains. But they will even point out that I'm smarter in these domains than I was when we were talking like 3, 4 calls ago. And that allows me to grow. And at the same time, I'm bringing my expertise to them and they are asking me questions about my particular expertise. They might be asking me about technology or about diagnosis or about building a consulting practice or developing software products, which I've all done successfully. But they learn as well. When you have people who are better at you or who you perceive at least to be better at you in a given domain, they help you grow. And that friendship becomes mutual.
