The Revolutionary Zero-Shot Capabilities of GPT-2

In this presentation, the speaker introduces GPT-2, a 1.5 billion‑parameter transformer trained solely on next‑token prediction using the large, diverse WebText corpus. Despite lacking any task‑specific supervision, GPT‑2 can perform a range of NLP tasks—summarization, translation, and question answering—in a zero‑shot setting. It achieves state‑of‑the‑art results on seven of eight language‑modeling benchmarks and even matches or surpasses supervised baselines, such as attaining a 55 F1 score on the CoQA reading‑comprehension benchmark without any task‑specific training data. The speaker argues that scaling unsupervised models with broad data enables them to implicitly acquire many tasks simply from natural‑language exposure, marking a revolutionary shift in how language models can be built and applied.
