How to Become an Overnight Success

Richmond Dinh compares success to a bamboo tree: four years of invisible growth underground, then 30 feet in 30 days. He named his company Bamboo to capture this idea and argues overnight success is a myth. What matters is persistence and believing in work nobody sees yet.

Success is like a bamboo. Now, before you start thinking, holy shit, Richmond, you've really lowered the standard in this video. Just hear me out for a second here. Now, did you know that in the first four years, in the first four years of a bamboo tree's life, everything happens beneath the surface, Literally. You don't get any sprouts or results or bamboos that grow out of the ground until the four year mark. And in those first four years, you need to water it and nurture it and give it nutrients and feed it, otherwise it'll die. Now, just imagine that for a second there. Just think about that for a second there. In four years of the bamboo's life, you gotta look after it and nurture it and give it nutrients without even knowing whether it's still alive or not. And you just have to have the confidence and the trust and the faith and the belief that it's gonna yield an amazing result. Then, after four years, when the first drought comes out of the ground, the bamboo literally shoots up into the sky and grows 30ft in 30 days. And that's the strong bamboo that you and I see. And the reason why I called my company Bamboo, not because I'm Asian, but because success takes time. And there is no such thing as an overnight success. In fact, never have I and never will I ever teach or preach or coach that you can become an overnight success. In fact, people who are successful only briefly get rewarded in public for what they spend years practicing in thriving. And this is why success is like a bamboo tree, because you got to put in the work, you gotta fully commit, you gotta be patient and persistent. But most importantly, you got to have the trust and the faith and the belief that your time will come. And when it does, it will come big. And I can assure you, the more you trust yourself, the more you believe in your own ability, the more successful you will be.
