Richmond Dinh (speaker) explores whether destiny/fate/Grace or personal action determines outcomes. He argues life is a balance: excessive faith in destiny can reduce action, while excessive belief in self-determination can make setbacks hard to accept. He shares a personal anecdote about nearly going bankrupt and losing "over a million dollars," which he later frames as a turning point that led him from being an unfulfilled optometrist to helping others pursue their dreams. He concludes that if someone isn't where they want to be, it is either insufficient action or possibly destiny working toward a larger plan, and only the individual can discern which.

Do you believe in the universe, fate, karma, serendipity, destiny, whatever you want to call it? Or do you believe that we create our own destiny and our own fate? Look, there's a problem with both beliefs. If you strongly believe that you know what, everything happens for a reason, it'll all fall into place, it'll all work out, it'll all be fine. Then you fall into the trap of not taking enough action to make your dreams come true. On the flip side, if you strongly believe that you are the master of your own destiny, that you create all the results in your life, then you run the risk that when things don't go your way, it will be much harder for you to accept. And if things don't go your way for long enough and it repeats over and over and over again, then you run the risk of losing hope in life. Now, I believe that that life is a dance between going out there and taking massive, massive action to make your dreams come true. But also understanding that sometimes when things don't go your way, it might be Grace showing up. And I experienced this firsthand when I almost went bankrupt four years ago and I lost over a million dollars and I was completely broke. I was so angry. I was so pissed off with life. I thought, why is this happening to me? I certainly didn't feel like I deserved it because I worked so hard to get there. But had that not happened, I would have still been an unfulfilled optometrist and not doing what I'm doing right now. And that's helping thousands of people chase their dreams and goals and step into their greatness. And for that reason, I felt like the universe or Grace or destiny had something bigger planned for me. Now, if you're not where you are right now in your life, it's probably for two reasons. Either you're not taking enough action to get the results that you're after, or maybe destiny or fate or Grace has something bigger planned for you. But here's the thing. Only you will know which one that is.
