In this solo episode of the Stand Sure Podcast, host Rob Anderson shares his personal journey of being abruptly laid off from a contract role, the ensuing period of uncertainty, and how those shake‑ups sparked the creation of StandSure Coaching. He explains that the coaching practice emerged from his own need to rebuild health, finances, relationships, and purpose after a career disruption, positioning it as a “phoenix from the ashes.” Anderson then outlines three practical strategies for anyone experiencing a life shake‑up: (1) stop reacting and instead observe the situation to gain clarity; (2) avoid going it alone by seeking trusted support, especially a coach; and (3) treat the disruption as a reset, letting go of unhelpful habits and redefining values and future goals. Throughout, he emphasizes the coaching process as a safe, question‑driven space that moves clients from insight to action. The episode concludes with a promotional offer – a $100 discount on a monthly three‑session coaching package for sign‑ups in August – and an invitation to schedule a free discovery call via www.standsurecoaching.com.

You know, sometimes our lives have to be completely shaken up, torn down, rearranged, and flipped inside out just to get us to the place that we were meant to be. My name is Rob Anderson. I'm the host of Stand Sure Podcast, which is an extension of Stand Sure Coaching. And I hope you will check me out. At www.stansurecoaching.com. Actually, this month I have got a super special deal going, and that is $100 off of a coaching package, a monthly coaching package, which is 3 sessions. And I've already discounted that price, so you get the discount price and then you get an additional $100 off for the month of August. Or when you register in August. You don't have to use it in August, you just have to sign up in August. So yeah, sometimes our lives just get completely shaken up. And, you know, that's been my reality really for the past 2 years, but more so this last year. I was on a steady path this last year. I had a contract role. It gave me purpose, gave me direction, gave me some stability. I was doing what I felt was meaningful work, and I thought I had this runway ahead of me. And then one night around 10 o'clock, I got the email: contract terminated. No warning, no conversation. It was just done. And yeah, Even though I was preparing for that and I knew that it was— there was a good possibility it was going to come, it hit hard. It didn't hit hard as the previous year when unexpectedly my employer decided to change direction and I got let go. And I think part of that was because I'd already built up some resilience. And I know I'm not the only one who's ever experienced that, and a lot of us go through it, and we find that it's disorienting. But what I've learned is that those shakeups, as horrible as what they are, Can also be the turning point. If we let them, they can force us to confront parts of our— really parts of ourselves that we've ignored. The things that we've been putting on the back burner. I put Stan Schur Coaching on the back burner off and on for years. I first started the concept of Stan Schuur back in 1999, and I just kept putting it on the back burner, and I would integrate it into other areas, whether it was through Adventure IQ or Neptune Warrior. But what was happening is that as I was grinding through work and family and responsibilities and just trying to survive, that I was really missing my true calling. So this last spring when everything just, just fell apart, I started this sabbatical in place. And I like, I like to think I didn't go anywhere, but I did go to Bonaire, but that trip had already been planned anyway. What I did though is my focus was really about staying here and rebuilding from the inside out. I looked at my health, I looked at my finances, I looked at my relationships, I looked at my future. And I started asking myself some really tough questions. And that's truly where StandSure Coaching was born. It wasn't a perfect vision. It was really from the rubble. It was the phoenix flying up out of the ashes. It came from knowing what it's like to lose your footing. And fighting to find it again. So today, that's why I enjoy working with others. They're going through their own people who are going through their own shakeups, whether it's a change in a relationship, getting laid off, figuring out what life looks like outside of what the norm has been. Navigating transitions that people didn't ask for— divorce, burnout, loss— or just that quiet struggle of not feeling like themselves anymore. And as a coach, this is what I love about coaching. I don't have to tell anybody what to do. I don't have to create a checklist that fixes everything. What I do get to do is I offer a safe space, solid questions, and a process that helps them to move forward, not just in theory, but in practice. Not by diagnosing anything, but doing it in action in real life. And we continue that process of looking at what's working, what's not working, what needs to change, focusing on building a future that is intentional, that's grounded and aligned. And I think that's something I love the most about this, is that building a future that's grounded and that's aligned with who they are and not just who the world expects them to be. So what do you do when life shakes you up? Well, I got 3 practical tips I'm going to give you in this podcast that have made all the difference for me and the clients I work with. The big one, stop reacting. Start observing. When everything is turned upside down, our first instinct is to react, to scramble, go get stuff done. What's the checklist? But the real clarity comes when you pause. You don't rush into the next thing. Step back and observe. Look at what's happening. Ask yourself, what's really going on here? Because we want to have a better understanding of what's being revealed, not just what's being taken away. That space between the shakeup and your next move is where the transformation begins. Number 2, don't do it alone. That was a hard lesson for me, and it's a hard lesson for some of my clients that eventually realize That it's not— it's not bravado. You don't have to walk through this alone. You need someone who can help you see past the surface, someone that you can trust, someone who's in your corner. And that's what I love about coaching. You can have people in your life who listen and hear you. What I love about coaching is I can be fully present with them. And I can challenge thinking. I can get them to look deeper, to unravel questions that they don't even know that they had, and help them connect the dots between their experience and the next chapter. It's powerful. Tip number 3, use it as a reset. Use it as a reset on your terms. Life has already shaken things up. Use that disruption to rebuild something intentional. This is your opportunity to let go. Just, just let it go with the things that weren't working— old habits, old expectations, roles that really you were never meant to carry— and get honest about what matters now. What do you want your life to look at? Really, one of the simplest questions— it's not a simple question, but one of the questions that you can simply begin untangling one day at a time is, what do you want your life to look like moving forward? One of the greatest gaps with many of my clients is just understanding their values. And what values do they want to lead with? On a shakeup, on a reset, you get to choose. Hey, I get it. Shakeups are rarely comfortable, but they're often necessary. And if you're in one right now, maybe it's not about fixing it. Maybe it's about learning from it. If you're ready to talk, if you're ready to walk through that process and figure out what's next, this is what. I do. Like I said in the beginning, sometimes our lives have to be completely shaken up, torn down, rearranged, and just flipped all over the place like a rag doll at times. But it's a process. To get us where we're meant to be. Reach out. I want to walk through this with you. Don't forget, for the month of August, go out to the website, www.stanshurecoaching.com.
