Episode 34: Focus Forward
9 Sept 2025 · 12 min
In this solo episode of the Stan Schurer Coaching Podcast, host Rob Anderson expands on a theme from his daily motivational videos. He argues that the present and future matter more than the past, using a car‑windshield metaphor to illustrate the danger of living in the rear‑view mirror. Anderson offers three concrete, forward‑looking practices: (1) set a forward‑focused goal for the week, choosing a small, actionable step that moves you toward a desired future; (2) let go of past regrets or worries by journaling, including a specific exercise of writing the issue, folding the paper, and setting it aside, and he promotes a six‑month group coaching/journaling workshop; (3) add value to someone else, which shifts perspective and builds momentum. Throughout, he interweaves promotion of his daily motivation content on TikTok, YouTube, and Patreon, a free 30‑minute coaching call, and the StanShererCoaching.com website. He ends with a challenge to write down the mantra “The life in front of me matters more than the life behind me,” place it visibly, and apply the three tips throughout the week.

Hey, welcome to the Stan Schurer Coaching Podcast. I am your host, Rob Anderson. I want to expand on something today that I talked about in my dailies. If you're not familiar with those, each day on TikTok and YouTube, I post out daily motivational stuff. I also post it over on my Patreon page. So if you go out to www.patreon.com/stanshiercoaching.com, or I'm sorry, stanshiercoaching.com, you'll find that. You can also go out to the Stanshier website, stanshiercoaching.com, and over on the far right there is A button that you can press for daily motivation. It'll take you to that Patreon page, and for $7 a month, you get delivered into your mailbox every day not only the daily, but a much deeper, much deeper conversation that's motivational that I, that I highlight on my daily. And today I'm going to talk about what I did on my daily today. And it's something that's easy to forget when we get caught up in just all the busyness of life. And the life that is in front of you is much more important than what's behind you. You know, we all have those moments we look back on, things we wish we had done differently. Man, I used to be really bad about this. I used to live— I used to relive the past with would've, could've, should'ves. We think back and we wish that we'd done some things different, maybe some things that we wish we had said, or maybe words that we wish we hadn't spoken, opportunities we let slip by. And while reflection has its place, staying stuck in yesterday robs us of today's momentum. And even worse, it It takes away the possibilities of tomorrow. And think about it. If you're driving a car, you need the windshield much more than what you need the rearview mirror. Yeah, we glance back every now and then just to stay aware of what's around us. But if you drive only in the rearview mirror, you're going to crash. And the same principles apply to our lives. So, Let's make this week about focusing forward. I want to give you 3 practical tips in order to do that. And I'm going to expand on each one. The first one, set a forward-focused goal. Start out the week by identifying one thing that moves you toward the future that you want. And it doesn't have to be some giant step. Sometimes the most powerful progress comes from the small steps. By the way, I just talked about this on my other podcast, One Dive at a Time, from the sense of how a diver progresses. But here in this world, I want you to identify that one thing that moves you forward towards the future that you want. And maybe, you know, maybe it's finishing up a task that has been on your desk. Maybe it's cleaning out the garage. Maybe it's reformatting that resume and cover letter. Maybe it's reaching out to a coach. By the way, I'm a coach. But, you know, maybe it's reaching out to someone that you've been meaning to connect with or carving out 30 minutes to work on a project that you're passionate about and you keep pushing off. Maybe it's an opportunity to take out your spouse or significant other or just spend some time with them. Just a whole host of different ideas. And as I'm going through this, I'm thinking of, wow, there's things that I've been neglecting and people that I've been neglecting that I need to go make time for. But the point is this. Forward motion doesn't happen by accident. It happens when you choose it. Now, here's my little blurb about coaching again. This is where a coach helps you. A coach is going to help you get on the right path, be accountable, find out what is really the things that you need to do, and helping you make it happen. Over on my page, Stanshercoaching.com. There is a link for a free call. Let's do a free call. I mean, you at least deserve yourself, you know, deserve that. Carve out 30 minutes for that free call. All right. Tip number 2, let go of what's behind you. And this one's harder, but it's vital. We all carry regrets. We carry frustrations. We have doubts, things from the past, but holding on to them doesn't change them. It just weighs us down. This is where journaling is a huge help. I'm going to do another little promo here. I've got a coaching/journaling workshop. It takes place over 6 months. It's a group format. You're going to learn how to journal, and you're also going to get coaching. You're going to get some of those, those really curious questions that need to be asked so you can leave things behind and move forward. Holding on to them doesn't change them. It weighs us down. When you're able to put that into a journal, you can move forward. So this week, Try picking one thing that you've been carrying and decide not to bring it forward with you. And like I said, one of the most practical ways to do that is to put it into a journal. I do a small little exercise with some of my clients. I have them write it out on a piece of paper, fold it up, set it aside, and give yourself permission to not revisit it this week. I was laying in bed last night, 2:30 in the morning. I woke up and I started thinking about work, about work-related stuff. I rolled over, I wrote it down in the pad that I keep beside my bed, and I was able to go back to sleep because I gave myself permission to not revisit it last night. If it starts to creep back into your mind, just remind yourself. You know, in the case of putting it on a piece of paper and giving yourself permission to not revisit it, if it creeps back in, just remind yourself that that belongs to yesterday. And you're going to be amazed. And this sounds like, you know, one of those foo-foo exercises, but you'll actually be amazed at how much lighter you feel when you intentionally release something that no longer serves you. All right. Tip number 3. Add value to someone else. One of the fastest ways to focus on what's ahead is to step outside of yourself and lift someone else up. This morning when I came in the office, each person I saw, I purposely found something to compliment them on or check in with them on, congratulate them on. When you focus on what's ahead, you're able to step outside of yourself and lift someone else up. When you're doing that, that, you know, you know, sending out encouraging texts, offering a helping hand, share a bit of your time, your energy, your insight with someone. Who needs it? Adding value doesn't just help the other person, it shifts your own perspective. It anchors you in things that are present and it builds momentum toward a future where you're contributing, where you're growing, and you're connected. So just a real quick recap, and by the way, over on The Patreon page, I've got these lined out for you. Set a forward-focused goal. Let go of what's behind you and add value to someone else. Now let's pull all that together. Imagine your week if you did those 3 things. You chose that specific goal. You let go of one thing and you added value to someone else's day. And by Friday, you know, here we are on Tuesday, if you're listening to this today, by Friday, you wouldn't just be crossing items off your to-do list, you'd be moving into the life that's in front of you with clarity, with purpose and momentum. I want to partner with you to do that. So here's my challenge. Don't let the rearview mirror dictate your direction. Glance back if you have to. That's what journals are for. But keep your eyes on the road ahead, which is what coaches are for. Every step you take this week is a step toward the person you're becoming Not the person that you were. And if you need a reminder, write this down. Put it somewhere where you're going to see it. Put it on a Post-it note, put it on your, you know, on your monitor of your computer, put it in your journal, put it on your fridge, put it on your mirror. But write this down, put it someplace where you're going to see it. And that is this: The life in front of me matters more than the life behind me. I'm gonna say it again. Write it down. The life in front of me matters more than the life behind me. Carry it with you. Practice those 3 tips. See how it changes the way your week unfolds. Reach out to me. StanShererCoaching.com. There's a link on there for a free coaching call. Go on there, fill out the form. Let's connect. And I want you to move forward and make this week a success. Thank you.
