Episode 35: Know Your Value- Lessons from a Bottle
10 Sept 2025 · 13 min
In this solo podcast episode, the host (Rob Anderson, operating under the brand stansherdcoaching) reflects on his recent health transition—switching from soda to sparkling water—and uses the sparkling‑water bottle as a metaphor for personal value. He shares how environments (jobs, group chats, relationships) can inflate or deflate perceived worth, noting that the water itself never changes, only the price tag set by the context. Drawing on his experience with CliftonStrengths coaching, he argues that surrounding oneself with people who affirm strengths is essential. He then offers three concrete hacks: (1) audit your social circle for uplifting versus draining influences, (2) place yourself intentionally in workplaces and communities that recognize your worth, and (3) remind yourself daily through a structured journaling practice. Throughout, he promotes his Patreon (stansherdcoaching.com) for $7/month, which provides expanded daily motivational talks, and offers a free 30‑minute coaching session via his website. The episode’s core message is that intrinsic worth is constant, but growth and confidence are nurtured when you situate yourself in environments that value you.

Hey, so this morning on my dailies, I talked about the value. I talked about value and I used a metaphor around sparkling water. Sparkling water. A lot of you who have either followed the One Dive at a Time podcast Or have been following this podcast know that right now I'm going through a transition in life where I'm all of a sudden I'm struggling with with some health stuff. I'm struggling with weight and things like that, and I've moved over to sparkling water in place of sodas. I would like to say I've been 100% successful. I am not there yet, but I'm I'm still working on that. By the way, you might pick up those dailies over on places like TikTok or even on YouTube. I actually expand those dailies over on my Patreon page, so. Patreon.com/stanshercoaching. I'll go in, I'll do 2 to 3 minute motivational talks each and every day focused around one of the dailies that I've done. And of course, then you get some information here on the podcast. But I gotta tell you, if you really want to help me out, it's only $7 a month. And not only do you get that, but you also get special deals and discounts, get early bird Access, and then there's content that I don't share on a podcast, I don't share my videos, I don't share it on my dailies, that it all comes back here. And that ties into value. I've just decided I'm going to move myself into circles where I'm more valued. You know, so often in life we find ourselves in places where we're not valued. And I've lived it in different ways. I've been in jobs where I worked hard, I gave Everything I had, and I still felt overlooked or bypassed, ignored. I've been in group texts where my words got ignored. My I would share something out in in that group text, and it was like I didn't exist. It was like I didn't matter. And I've also been in relationships where I felt cast aside or that I was being used. I wasn't being valued. I wasn't being appreciated. And all those experiences, they cut deep. And I'm willing to bet that in your own way, you've experienced that as well. And when it's, you know, when it happens, it's really easy to start questioning your own worth. You start wondering, Am I really that easy to replace? Am I that easy to ignore? Am I not good enough? But here's what I've learned. Your value doesn't change just because someone else doesn't recognize it. As I shared on my dailies this morning, and as I shared over on the Patreon page, I learned that lesson staring at a bottle of sparkling water. Like I said earlier, in order to break my soda habit, I've been switching out sparkling water in place of soda. I like the bottle. I like being able to twist the cap. I can add some flavors to it. And I'm really, really trying hard to make those changes. But what I noticed along the way is that, you know, I buy, and I'm not going to share the brand, but I'll buy whatever brand in Costco that's on sale and has like the $5 off coupon. When I do that and I buy it in bulk, it runs me like 50 cents to 80 cents. If I'm in a grocery store at a checkout counter, it's like $1.99 or $2.50. At a convenience store, It might be like up around $3. If I go to a sporting event, if I go out to the car races, if I go to a concert, it's like $4. If I get stuck at the airport, it's like $5 or $6. Now, the bottle and what's in the bottle, it doesn't change. It's the exact same water. It's the exact same amount of ounces. But the environment changes. And when that environment changes, it changes how much it's valued. And that's exactly how life works. Psychologists call this a function of social environments. The way we're treated in our jobs, our relationships, our communities— those environments shape how we feel about ourselves. When you're in a place that dismisses your contributions, it's really easy to shrink. It's easy to start believing that story. If someone is using you, if someone's not valuing you, if you've got a job where you're not valued, or worse, you have a boss— maybe you have a job that you love, but you've got a boss that's toxic. When you're surrounded by people who affirm your strengths and your confidence and your potential, man, everything changes. This is why I love coaching with CliftonStrengths, because CliftonStrengths focuses on your strengths. That's one of my favorite workshops to teach. It's one of my favorite coaching sessions to do. You know, when you're surrounded by people who affirm your strengths, your confidence, your potential expands, and you're not changing who you are. It's about choosing where you're placed. I'm a huge advocate of firing relationships. Or firing customers, firing bosses. Life is too short to just live with all that toxicity. I'm coaching a client right now around relationships and how really for years they've been used. And it's heartbreaking. It's not about who's who, you know, it's not about changing who you are and what you come to offer. It's about the environment that you're in. So I want to switch gears just a little bit. I want to give you 3 practical hacks To live this out. Number 1, the biggest one here I think, is audit your circle. If you're not around people who are uplifting you, if you're not around people who are helping you move forward, you got to get a different circle. Take an honest look at the people around you. Who builds you up? Who drains you? Who's using you for the moment? If you're constantly surrounded by people who diminish you, it's time to rebalance your circle. Hack number 2, place yourself intentionally. Just like that sparkling water, your environment matters. Put yourself into workplaces, into friendships, into relationships, into communities That recognize your worth. I was part of a kind of an online text community that had sprung out of something that I, you know, of a community I helped create. And man, when I got to a point where I would text something or I would make a comment or I would ask a question and I was just flat out ignored. Instead of Letting that tear me down. Screw it, I'm out. I, I've hit a point, you know, when I talk about place yourself intentionally, I've hit a point in life that I'm only going to put energy into relationships where I'm getting an equal amount of energy back. That doesn't mean 24/7, if I put something energy in and I get it back right away, it may come later. But man, if it's not coming at all, Stop selling yourself short by staying in spaces where it feels like you don't matter. Hack number 3, remind yourself daily. Journaling is so important. I've got a 6-month journaling program, and it's really a coaching program. It's just that you're learning how to journal that coaching experience. You're getting 6 months of coaching at a really nominal fee. A journal is a great place to remind yourself, but remind yourself daily. Write down one thing that you bring to the table. And it's not fluff. It's actually a grounding practice. It keeps you anchored in truth, even when other voices try to convince you otherwise. That's why in my journal, I like to put pictures and I'll write out mind maps. This whole thing that I'm doing right now, my podcast, I use mind mapping for, but I also mind map out my day. It's a grounding practice that keeps you anchored. Because there are other voices out there. You know, there's a 9-to-1 ratio on negative comments or negative interactions to 1 positive, and that's in a non-toxic environment. So here's what it comes down to. This is the bottom line. Your worth is constant. It doesn't shrink just because someone doesn't notice it, and it doesn't magically grow just because someone finally does. Now, by the way, you do grow when you are with people who encourage you and provide positivity. You do grow. But for the sake of our conversation, it doesn't magically grow just because someone finally does notice you. But just like that bottle of sparkling water, you need to place yourself in the right setting where your values are respected, where your true value is seen and honored.
