Episode 42: Bad Apples in the Box - Breaking Free of Toxic Relationships
13 Oct 2025 · 11 min
In this Stand Sure Coaching podcast episode, host Rob Anderson discusses the "bad apple" effect of toxic people and situations, explaining how a single negative presence can drain the energy, confidence, creativity, and joy of individuals and groups. He cites a University of Washington study showing that one negative person can lower overall performance, and describes how toxicity can manifest subtly in workplaces, families, friendships, romantic relationships, and even in jobs or lifestyles. Anderson outlines the psychological impact—self‑doubt, shrinking behavior, walking on eggshells—and emphasizes that stepping away from toxic influences is a wise, not weak, choice. He introduces the concept of boundaries as "gates" rather than walls, encouraging listeners to say no without guilt and protect their peace. Anderson then positions coaching as a tool to untangle from toxic patterns, rebuild confidence, and design values‑aligned boundaries, offering a free 30‑minute discovery call through standsurecoaching.com for those who feel drained or stuck.

You know, one toxic person can drain the entire room. You and I have both felt it. It's that, that shift in the air just as they walk in. It could be a boss, a teammate, a partner, A friend, a spouse, even a situation, and it just pulls the life out of you. You go in, you're feeling good, but you walk out, you're feeling heavy, you're second-guessing yourself. And, and here's the worst part, you even question your own worth. Hey, this is Rob Anderson. I'm the host of Stand Sure Coaching. Welcome to the Stand Sure Podcast. I'm actually out on the road today. So my audio is a little bit different than where I really like it. So just be a little bit patient with me. Hey, by the way, excuse me there. By the way, you know, this is not an exaggeration. It's proven. There are studies out there. In fact, the University of Washington did a study that one negative presence can pull down the performance. It could pull down the energy of everybody that's in that room. It's, it's, it's just draining. One person's negativity can undo the good of 2, 3, 4, maybe even others that are trying to hold everything together. And whether it's in the workplace or if it's at home, Maybe it's your circle of friends. Toxicity, it spreads like wildfire. Now, by the way, there's something I do want to point out. We all have people in our lives. In fact, we've become that person sometimes, but we all have people in our lives that they're going through a rough time. I'm not saying just give up on them. I'm not just saying just cast them out because they're having, having a bad run. Because that stuff happens. And that's, that's why you have friendships and that's why you have bonds. Just because someone's having a bad run, that's, that's not what we're talking about here. What we're talking about is that person who is on a consistent basis that they're draining. And again, it could be a workplace. It could be in the home. It's called the bad apple effect. One bad apple. Can spoil the entire bunch. In human terms, one person's constant criticism, manipulation, pessimism, it can poison the entire environment. You begin to start, you start changing your own behavior around them. In fact, you may find yourself that you don't even want to be around them. You find yourself talking less, you're laughing less, you're shrinking yourself. And that's what toxic influence does. It shifts the entire culture, whether that's a workplace, a family environment, a friend circle. It makes good people feel like they're walking on eggshells around that person. And here's the kicker. It doesn't It doesn't matter how strong or how positive you are. It doesn't matter the good things that you're doing. It doesn't matter how hard you're trying, how hard you're performing. Exposure to negativity over time, it's been shown again and again, it erodes confidence of individuals as well as the group, creativity, and joy. You know, sometimes the toxic coworker, it's, you know, you kind of get stuck with them on a work team, right? But here's the thing, you know, sometimes it's not just a coworker. Sometimes it's someone you love. It's a friend who always turns the conversation back onto themselves. It's a partner who uses guilt or control To, you know, to keep you feeling small. Uh, it, it can be a boss who leads you to fear instead of vision. In other cases, it's not even a person. It's the situation. It's a volunteer opportunity, or it's a job that crushes your values. It's a circle that drains you instead of lifting you up. It, maybe it's a lifestyle. It's a lifestyle that keeps you stuck in survival mode. And toxicity doesn't just show up as yelling. It doesn't just show up as manipulation. It's subtle. And there's a slow decay of your own peace when you start rationalizing. For behaviors or before or situations that you've never accepted anywhere else. And there's a domino effect, just like in teams. One toxic influence can start a domino effect in your life. The negativity, it seeps in, then it spreads. And pretty soon you find out it's shaping your entire mindset. You start becoming someone that You don't recognize. You become reactive instead of being reflective. You become guarded instead of generous. You become tired instead of inspired. And the truth, it's not weakness to step away. I've fired relationships. I've fired, uh, I've fired myself from groups that I was a part of. I've walked away from relationships and I've walked away from situations that kept me stuck. It's not weakness to step away. It's wisdom. You don't have to set yourself up on fire just to keep other people warm. Be selfish, protecting your peace. It isn't selfish. It's how you keep your energy level aligned for the people, for those people in your life, and for purposes that really, really matter. Breaking free of toxic energy and breaking free of toxic people and breaking free of toxic situations starts with awareness. And you ask yourself, who in my life makes me feel smaller after I've been around them? You can ask yourself, what situations do I leave feeling drained instead of fulfilled? Or maybe the question is, where am I ignoring red flags? Because I'm afraid of conflict or I'm afraid of change. Then comes the boundaries. They're not walls, they're gates. I'm gonna say that again. Boundaries, they're not walls, they're gates. And that's, that's a very important distinction. Boundaries let in what's healthy and boundary keeps out what's harmful. It means learning to say no without guilt. It means valuing your peace over someone else's approval. And I think a lot of us have gone down that path, and a lot of us have been stuck on that path of looking for approval of people who don't matter. When you start protecting your energy, There's something very powerful that happens. You begin to attract people and you begin to attract opportunities that match your own growth. Hey, if this is resonating with you, this is an area I love to work in. You see, this is where coaching comes in. Coaching gives you the space to untangle from that emotional weight of toxic people and toxic patterns. It helps you rebuild confidence, rediscover your voice, and design boundaries that align with your values. I would love to be that coach. And if it's not me, I'm fine with that. I just want to share the knowledge that, that, that I've learned. The hard way over years on a firsthand basis, then also working with clients. But I would love to be that person. But if this message hits home, if you've been feeling drained, undervalued, maybe stuck in cycles that no longer serve you, I'd like to be that person to help you step into coaching, and together we'll explore what's toxic, what's healthy, but most importantly, how to move forward with strength and clarity. I say this probably on every podcast: coaching isn't therapy, coaching isn't counseling, it's moving Because one toxic person or situation can break your spirit, but one courageous choice, one courageous choice to change can it can completely transform your life again.
