In this solo episode, host Rob Anderson merges his two shows—Stand Sure Coaching Podcast and One Dive at a Time (the veteran‑focused segment of the Neptune Warrior community)—to deliver a coaching monologue centered on self‑compassion and reframing self‑image. Using diving as a metaphor for going beneath the surface, he addresses common veteran challenges such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, and the pressure of external validation. He presents three practical "hacks": (1) Redefine the mirror by recognizing that literal mirrors, social‑media feedback, and past performance metrics do not capture the whole person, and pause to rewrite harsh self‑stories; (2) Focus on inner energy rather than outward perfection, drawing on authentic moments of vitality, especially the quiet, rhythmic state experienced while diving; (3) Apply a "compassion check‑in" coaching tool that asks three questions—what’s the truth behind the feeling, what would you say to a friend, and what small act of kindness can you give yourself—to turn self‑criticism into self‑coaching. He emphasizes the importance of regular check‑ins, mindfulness, and coaching support, and concludes with a call to action to visit stansurecoaching.com for a free discovery call. The episode blends motivational storytelling, veteran‑specific mental‑health insights, and actionable coaching techniques.
Chapters
Hey, this weekend I am combining 2 podcasts together. A lot of you know I've got 2 shows that I run. One is Stand Sure Coaching Podcast, where I talk about— specifically, I talk about coaching. And then the other one is One Dive at a Time, which is set up for our veteran community that dives within Neptune Warrior. And Neptune Warrior, our 3 pillars are diving, community, and coaching. I'm going to combine those 2 podcasts today so you get to share each other's channel. Always excited about doing that, knocking out 2 birds With one stone. Just kind of make things a little bit easier. Hey, you know, beauty starts in your heart. It doesn't start in the mirror. And it's a simple truth, but it's one that we often forget in a world that measures worth by appearance. It measures it by the likes we get on social media, and it really filters out who we truly are. And today I want to talk about what it really means to see yourself with compassion and how that shift really— guys, I got to tell you, it changes everything. So right now we're on our way down to Nevada. We're headed down for a weekend. Where we're just going to dive. And it's not to escape, but it's really to recharge. And as I was packing my gear, I was reminded how often we need to dive beneath the surface, both in water as well as in life. On the surface, We can make things look really calm. We can make things look very copacetic, like there's no stress, like there's no anxiety, that there's nothing going on. On the surface, it looks so calm. It looks like glass out there, right? But it's below where the real clarity begins. If you've been hurting, if you're feeling lost, or if you're struggling with self-image, in this episode I'm going to give you some hacks. I want, I want to explore I want to explore and help you rebuild your inner confidence and see your reflection differently. Not, not just from the mirror, but also what's in your mindset. Hack number 1, redefine the mirror. Every day we look into mirrors that don't reflect the full story. And that's literal mirrors. It can be Mirrors of social media. It can be other people's opinions. But none of those, absolutely none of those, show the real you. For my veterans, you know, the mirror was what cool schools you went to, what your performance evaluations, what your rank was. How other people felt about you. In the civilian world, it's how people on projects look at you, how your boss looks at you, your coworkers. None of those show the real you. And when you catch yourself judging your reflection, I want you to pause. I want you to stop. I want you to pause, and I want you to ask, what story am I telling myself right now? I get caught up in this because people that on the military side of things, you know, I jumped out after 13 years, and I went to go see, went on to see some of my closest friends, things that I grew up with. People I grew up with, people that— we were on the cutting edge of things that were taking place, and I got to watch them press on. Some became officers. Some became senior noncoms. I've had the same thing happen over in the civilian world. People that, when I changed ladders, when I jumped from one ladder to the next ladder and started from the bottom building up again. People that I started out with on those ladders, now they're VPs, senior directors, some are even retired. When you catch yourself judging your reflection, pause and ask, what story am I telling myself right now? If that story is harsh, if that story is critical, it's time to rewrite it. The mirror doesn't get to define your worth. The mirror doesn't get to define your actions. It's your actions and your character that create the definition. When I'm coaching clients, we actually call this reframing, and it's changing the lens through which you view a situation and by reframing how you see yourself. When you do that, you open the door to self-acceptance and you open the door to growth. Hack number 2, focus on that inner energy, not the outer perfection. Confidence isn't about perfection. It's about energy. The people who truly stand out, they're not the ones who are flawless. They're the ones who are the most authentic. Take a deep breath and think about the moments when you felt alive, when you felt connected, when you're proud of who you were. Man, for me, again, that's diving. When I'm down below and I'm showing people cool things that they've never seen before, I get a charge out of that. That's the real you. And that's— and the real beauty is showing up. You see, again, when I'm underwater, it's quiet. There's no noise. There's no comparison. It's just rhythm. It's focus. It's peace. And you can find that same state through mindfulness, through journaling. Maybe it's on a long drive with no agenda. Give yourself permission to recharge, to step away from what the world expects, and return with your energy renewed. Hack number 3. Use a coaching strategy. This is a tool that I use with clients. It's called a compassion check-in. I use it with my clients all the time. It's simple and it's powerful. When you're being hard on yourself, ask yourself these 3 questions. Number 1, what's the truth behind this feeling? Just like a lot of vets out there, I deal with depression. I deal with anxiety. I deal with trying to manage all the crap that goes on with my PTSD. And when those hard things hit, I have to ask myself, and this is what I ask my clients: What's the truth behind this feeling? Number two, what would I say to a friend? In this situation? And I ask my clients, if you had a friend going through this, what would you ask them? What would you say to them? And number 3, and this one's big, this one will actually help to pull you out of the rut. What is one small act of kindness that I can show myself right now? What this does is it turns self-criticism into self-coaching. And I got to tell you, one of the best ways to learn that is to be working with a coach that can build that habit of you doing that on your own. Because it builds awareness, it helps you pivot from judgment to growth. And over time, it retrains your mind to respond with curiosity, And not condemnation. Your beauty starts in your heart, not in the mirror. Be gentle with yourself. Reframe the story that you tell when you look in the mirror. Retrain yourself to focus. On your inner energy. And when you catch those critical thoughts that creep in, and they're going to, use that compassion check-in, and it's going to help you guide yourself back to the truth. All my clients have the opportunity to do check-in calls, just a real quick check-in call. Throughout the week or throughout the month, or even just a quick check-in text. And that's important because they are either catching themselves or when I'm texting them, it gives them a chance to catch those critical thoughts. That just try to stealthily come into their lives. You know, healing, just like diving, happens when you slow down, breathe, and you just trust the process. Hey, if this message connected with you, I want you to share it with someone who needs the reminder. That the reflection that they see doesn't define their value. And if you're ready to take that next step toward personal growth, I would love to be the coach that's in your life that can be a powerful— I don't want to say person— that can really be that, that That powerful tool that you use as a way to discover who you really are beneath the surface. Go out to the website, www.stansurecoaching.com. I'll put it down in the show notes. Reach out. I've got a free discovery call. I love to walk through and see If this is a good matchup. All right.
