Episode 54: Deep Waters — Finding Clarity Beneath the Surface
21 Nov 2025 · 12 min
In this solo coaching‑style monologue, the host (Stan Sherer/Sherwood) uses the "deep waters" metaphor to explore how unexamined inner emotions create a hidden heaviness that many people experience while appearing functional on the surface. He describes how insight—drawn out through reflective questioning rather than external directives—leads to breakthroughs, greater confidence, clearer purpose, and healthier relationships. The speaker shares personal anecdotes about a challenging week, recent coaching breakthroughs, and his professional journey from running Adventure IQ to working with veterans (Neptune Warrior) dealing with anxiety and PTSD. He emphasizes the importance of presence over perfection in content creation, encouraging listeners to keep seeking insight. The episode concludes with a multi‑tiered invitation: a free daily‑boost Patreon club, paid Patreon tiers offering behind‑the‑scenes content and monthly coaching, and a free 30‑minute discovery call via his website (StanSherwoodCoaching.com).

Man, I'm not gonna— I'm not gonna shy away from it. It was kind of a challenging week. There was some ups and there was a couple things that just kind of knocked me down a little bit. But I'm maintaining with the positivity. I'm going to keep pressing forward with being encouraging to others, to myself, to my family. But yeah, this week, man, I kind of had my heart ripped out a little bit. But that's okay. We'll get into that here in a minute. Before we dive into today's episode, I want to make sure I pre-frame something for you, and that's at the end of this podcast. I'm going to extend an invitation, a way for you to step into deeper clarity work with me. So as you listen, just keep that in mind. Everything I'm about to share leads forward to the next step if you feel called to take it, and if not. Y'all, that's pretty— that's cool, all right? Get what you can out of the podcast, right? There's been something that's been sitting with me all week, and I saw it on a sweatshirt, and it says, the purpose of a person's heart are deep waters. But one who has insight draws them out. First of all, if you know anything about me, you know that I've got this really close relationship with water. I use a lot of water metaphors on my other podcast. Maybe I need to start using them a little more over here. And the more I sit with it, the more I realize how accurately it describes the human experience. On the surface, most people look like they're doing fine. They look like they're functioning. They look like they've got it all under control. They're keeping up the appearances. They're checking off responsibilities and they're doing what they're supposed to do. But inside, man, there's a depth that almost never gets explored. And most people live their entire lives skimming across the surface of who they are. They make decisions based upon urgency or somebody else's emergency instead of purpose. They react instead of reflecting. They solve for like what's just sitting right in front of them. Instead of what's happening underneath. And after a while, that creates this quiet heaviness. It creates a sense of that something's off, that they're stuck, that they're— in some cases, maybe they're drowning. They're swimming against the current. They know that something's off, even if they can't name it. Man, I've been there. It's like, man, what is going on? I can't figure out. Is it anxiety? Is it depression? Is it the PTSD? Is somebody else dragging me down? You can't put your finger on it. And those are your deep waters speaking. And deep waters are honest. They don't lie. They don't sugarcoat it. They don't stay quiet just because you want them to. Those deep waters hold things like the truth about why you feel stuck, the desires that you've been afraid to say out loud. Maybe it's the stress that you try to blow off or pretend that it doesn't bother you. You know, it could be a situation of boundaries that you needed to set, but you haven't set those yet. Could be the pain that you minimized because there just wasn't space to deal with it. We are so conditioned to push past our inner world that we forget That it really determines everything. Every decision you make, every conflict you feel, every moment of hesitation or momentum. It comes from what's happening right there underneath the surface. And yet clarity, it's not going to come from, from digging harder. It comes from drawing out. And I want you to think about that. Insight draws out what's already inside you. That's why I love working with a coach. I had a fantastic coaching session yesterday and had a couple of breakthroughs. And that's what I love doing as a coach, is helping people with breakthroughs. Insight draws out. Insight draws out what's already inside you. And man, that is liberating because you don't need someone to be telling you who to be. You don't need someone to hand you the answers, and you don't need a checklist or a script or a guru. Or someone else's blueprint for your life. You need space. You need questions that make you think differently. You need reflection so the deeper truth can rise on its own. You need awareness, the kind that feels like— it feels like a light, a quiet light, or a very dim light that turns on inside you. You know, like when you're waking up. And it's one of those days that you actually get to sleep in. You don't set the alarm, and you actually wake to the sun slowly waking you up. Most people aren't lost. They're simply living disconnected from the deeper self. And here's the part that's even more powerful. When you do slow down, And allow those deeper waters to be drawn out, everything begins to shift. What I notice with my clients is that their stress actually starts to make sense. Their direction becomes clearer. For me, on a personal level, my confidence increases because I finally align With who I actually am. And I've gone through different stages of that. When I was running Adventure IQ and teaching survival and using survival and coaching, and then later on with Neptune Warrior, where I was working with veterans and people with anxiety and PTSD and how the water was an avenue to start opening that stuff up. I knew who I was. I was aligned with who Who I, you know, who my true self is. Everything shifts. You're going to find that your relationships improve because you're communicating from truth instead of pressure. Your decisions become grounded instead of just reacting. And the moment that you stop running from what's inside you, the moment you get honest about what's really going on, you unlock this part of your life that you've been trying to reach. And maybe you didn't realize that that's what you're trying to reach, but all of a sudden it becomes clear. This is what I'm going for. And by the way, it's not about being perfect. It's about that presence. Man, right now I'm going through some stuff right now. In my own coaching practice, I continually search for my audience and for my niche. I put out YouTube videos, I get 5 viewers. Maybe on some I get 500 viewers. I put out a TikTok, people post back rude comments. I put out this podcast. I love it. This podcast, man, I, you know, I put it out there as if, as if I've got 100,000 followers. I might have 5, but it's the 5 that matter. If you're listening to this, you're listening because you matter. It's not about perfection. It's about presence. It's about awareness. It's about insight, because insight is what brings clarity to the surface. I want you to keep searching for that insight. I want you to keep searching for that purpose. Fail fast, man. If you don't get it on the first one, try again. If you don't get it on the next one, keep trying again. It's insight what brings clarity to the surface, those deep waters, what's underneath.
