In this solo podcast episode, certified coach Rob Anderson explores what healthy masculinity truly means beyond cultural stereotypes of dominance and aggression. He argues that authentic masculinity is rooted in purpose, courage, sacrifice, and protective love. Anderson shares a personal anecdote from a hardware store where he intervened to protect a woman, illustrating that masculinity is about decisive, compassionate action rather than bravado. He cites John Eldredge’s book Wild at Heart as a formative influence, highlighting its three‑part mantra—battle, adventure, and beauty to rescue—as psychological truths that give men a sense of mission, excitement, and relational purpose. From a psychological standpoint, Anderson describes masculine energy as providing structure, direction, and a safe framework that enables creativity and emotional flourishing in families, workplaces, churches, and communities. He warns that when men suppress their mission, adventure, or love, they become restless, numb, or compensate with unhealthy behaviors. The episode concludes with a call to action, inviting listeners to connect with his StandSure Coaching service for a free 30‑minute session to reclaim grounded confidence and live from purpose.

Sitting around the fire pit last night with one of my clients, and we got into a topic of masculinity and what that means, what it really means to be a man. And I want to talk about that in this podcast, why masculinity matters, and not in a political way, but in a deeply human way. It's not about dominance, it's not about control, but it's about purpose, courage, and heart. My name is Rob Anderson. I am a certified coach, and I've been working with men, and what it really What it really means to have that masculinity that protects, that provides, that is caring. And this seems to be a message that is almost— I don't know, it's almost suppressed today. And by the way, if you're one of the women That listens to my podcast, you're more than welcome to listen to this one. I always enjoy feedback. But yeah, today I want to talk about that masculinity, that it's about purpose, it's about courage, it's about heart. And by the way, if what we talk about today resonates with you and you want to explore Living out a stronger and more grounded version of yourself. At the end, I'm going to share with you on how we can— how you and I can connect and just make that happen. Somewhere along the way, masculinity became confused with aggression, with ego. We started labeling strength as toxic. And I really believe that in doing so, we lost sight of what true masculinity actually is. It's sacrificial. It's courageous. It's deeply connected to purpose. It's being a provider. It's being a protector. You know, even a protector of, in some cases, people that you don't even know. You're standing up and doing the right thing. About a year ago, I had an incident at one of the hardware stores, and I honestly don't remember if it was Lowe's or Home Depot, but I think it's probably actually Lowe's. And a woman came up next to me, grabbed my arm, pulled herself in close, and she just said, There is a man that's been following me around the store. Please act like you're my husband. And so with that, I held her hand and I turned around and I looked right at the guy. And suddenly he just— and it wasn't like a stare-down, and I don't have this This badass look about me, but I just turned around and looked at the guy, and he turned around and walked away. Masculinity isn't about being a bad boy. It's not about being a badass, but it's about being willing to be courageous. It's having that purpose. It's being willing to fight for the hearts of others. One of the— a book that changed my life, and unfortunately I got away from it for a little bit, but a book that changed my life was written by a guy by the name of John Eldredge. It's called Wild at Heart, and I recommend this for every man that's out there, actually women. Read it and understand, especially if— well, I'm not going to go into the counseling aspect here, but if you're looking for a man, provided you're single right now, but if you're looking for a man and you want to see what true masculinity is about, I highly recommend it. Something that I have taken on as my personal mantra comes out of Wild at Heart: having a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue. A lot of women kind of get hung up on the whole rescue part, but it's knowing that Your man's got it covered. You can exhale. A true man's going to make sure that you're well loved, that you're well taken care of. Now, they're not just poetic ideals. They're actually psychological truths. You see, when a man, the way that we are wired— I can't speak for women because I've never been a woman. But for a man, when a man loses his sense of mission, his world shrinks. When he suppresses adventure, he becomes restless. And when he disconnects from love, whether that's romantic love, it, you know, it could even mean a brotherhood or spiritual love. But let's talk about romantic love. When he disconnects from that and he disconnects from all that stuff, having a mission, the lack of adventure, he becomes numb. Healthy masculinity doesn't suppress emotion. It channels it. It doesn't dominate. It protects. It doesn't seek applause. It seeks purpose. It's not loud. It's not boastful. But instead, it's grounded, dependable, and humble. Masculinity matters because men who know they bring safety and stability to their families, to their workplaces, to their communities, they create a strength that serves, not a strength that controls. They restore balance in a world that often swings between chaos and apathy, between dumpster fires to I just don't freaking care. They bring that safety and stability to the people they love, the people in their home, The place that they work, into their churches, into their community centers. It's a strength that serves. From a psychological standpoint, masculine energy represents structure and direction. You see, it provides the frame that allows creativity. It allows nurturing and emotion to thrive in that world. It's setting up those protective barriers so those people around can be more creative. They can offer themselves in a nurturing way. They can allow those emotions to blossom and to thrive. And without it, as a society, as a community, we drift. But with it, we build. What I found is that men who embrace their authentic masculinity become anchored. They know what they stand for. They know what they'll fight for. And they know who they're fighting alongside. And they don't have to go out and prove it. They don't have to act like a badass or a bad boy. They just live it. You can look around and you can see men who are living authentically, and you can see men who are trying to compensate for some kind of a wound. And you have to ask yourself, what kind of man are you? Are you a man that just feels lost, that feels stuck, that doesn't have an adventure? If you're a man who feels disconnected from that fire, if you've lost your sense of purpose, if you feel like you've lost your strength, I want to remind you, it's still there. You don't need to quote unquote perform masculinity. You don't need to act it out. You don't need to compensate. You don't need to go do crazy things to prove that you're a man. You need to remember it. Hey, if you're ready to reclaim that grounded confidence and live from a place of purpose, I want to invite you to connect with me through StandSure Coaching.
