Episode 76: Transformation not Information
25 Jun 2026 · 16 min
In this solo episode of the Stand Sure Podcast, ICF‑trained coach and veteran Rob Anderson explains why coaching should focus on transformation rather than merely delivering information. He frames his life in three chapters—military service where he learned leadership under pressure, a corporate learning‑and‑development career coaching Fortune‑500 leaders, and his current mission to help men navigate life transitions. Anderson argues that the modern world is saturated with information, but knowledge alone does not create change; transformation requires guided experience, accountability, and reflection. Using a scuba‑diving analogy, he illustrates that manuals and videos cannot make someone a diver—only practice in the water does. He emphasizes the coach’s role as a guide who asks powerful questions, surfaces patterns, and holds clients accountable, while the client remains the hero of their own story. Core coaching outcomes he cites are clarity, ownership, and commitment, which outlast fleeting advice. He identifies common obstacles to action—fear, self‑doubt, limiting beliefs, and old habits—and explains how coaching helps move from knowing to doing. Finally, Anderson promotes his newly launched one‑year transformation coaching program, available in individual and group formats, with a 38% discount for early sign‑ups, and provides contact details (standsurecoaching.com and rob@standsurecoaching.com). The episode ends with a call to listeners to shift from collecting information to taking transformational action.

Hey, you know, there are a lot of people out there that are in the information business. They tell you what to do, they give you advice, and then they send you on your way. Coaching, real coaching, is different. And as an ICF-trained coach, I believe that my role isn't to provide answers, it's to help you discover your own. I'm not walking ahead of you. I'm not walking behind you. I'm right there alongside you. Hey, welcome to Stand Sure Coaching. My name is Rob Anderson. I'm your host of the Stand Sure Podcast. Hey, my journey has been defined by 3 distinct chapters. Chapter 1 began with my time in the military where I learned the true meaning of leadership and resilience in some of the most high-pressure environments. Then on to chapter 2, I transitioned into corporate America, serving as a learning and development professional and leadership coach for Fortune 500 companies. Now I'm in my third chapter, dedicated to helping men navigate their own transitions, rediscover their purpose, and find what it means to lead with conviction. In their second half of life. You know, transformation, not information. What I want to talk about today is something that sits at the core of why I coach. We live in a world where information has never been more available It's everywhere. I mean, think about it. If you want to learn how to lose weight, build a business, communicate better, improve your marriage, become financially secure, maybe even train for a marathon, you can find thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of videos, podcasts, books, articles, all that. All that's right there within your reach. It's out there. Now you have to go look for it. And that is part of the problem is that you have to go scour for it. But honestly, information is not the problem. The problem is transformation. And most of you, most of us, we don't need another checklist. We don't need another expert talking ad nauseam. We don't need another motivational quote that makes us feel good for, you know, in reality, for about 5 minutes. Probably what we need, probably what you need, is someone to walk beside you. Walking beside you as you're doing that hard work. Of becoming the person that you want to become. And that is where coaching is so different. Coaching is like being a guide. Coaching is asking those hard questions. You know, when, when someone hires me, they're not buying information. They're not buying the expertise. They're not buying A curriculum. They're buying a relationship that's built around growth. Now, granted, the areas that I coach in, I've had success in, in those areas and/or I've helped someone create success in those areas. But I shouldn't be the hero in your story. It should never be about, yeah, Rob was coaching me and because of Rob. No, this is about your growth. When somebody hires me, they're buying a relationship that's built around growth. And one of the principles that I love about ICF coaching and, and the model that it presents Is that we believe that our clients are naturally creative, resourceful, and are whole. That means that when I walk into that coaching relationship, I don't assume that I know what's best for you. I don't know, you know, I don't assume I know what's best for my clients. And again, you need to be the hero in your story. I should never be the hero in your story. You're the hero. My role, my role is to be the guide. And sometimes that means asking a question that you've never considered. Sometimes it means helping you notice a pattern that's been running your life, maybe even ruining your life for years. At times it can mean that I'm sitting in silence and just wait as you think through something that you've never given yourself permission to explore at any time. Sometimes it's finding ways to keep you accountable, keeping you accountable to those commitments that you made. Especially when the motivation starts to fade. Because transformation, it's, it's not exciting every day. There's days it sucks. It's uncomfortable. It's frustrating. Some days it feels like you're taking 2 steps backward. And that's normal because real transformation is not a straight line. You know that I use a lot of analogies for scuba diving. That's, and that's my passion. You know, I can hand you a manual that's That's been written for scuba diving. I can hand you every manual that's been written for scuba diving. Words from the experts. I can show you things out of my blog. You can listen to my podcast on diving. I can explain things like buoyancy. I can explain breathing techniques. I can teach you emergency procedures, but none of that makes you a diver. You can read about it. You can watch videos on it. It doesn't make you a diver. Because at some point, you have to get in the water. You have to experience it. You have to make mistakes. You have to adjust. And you have to gain confidence one dive at a time. And life works the same way. Reading about confidence doesn't make you confident. Listening to a podcast about leadership doesn't make you a leader. Reading about better communication techniques doesn't suddenly improve your marriage or your relationships. Transformation happens through experience. Transformation happens through reflection, through practice. Through consistent action. And that is why coaching is so powerful. It's not going into a conversation and me showing off everything I know, all the different models, quotes, resources. It's about creating space where you discover what you already know, but maybe you haven't trusted yourself enough to act on. And I have to tell you, I see this again and again and again. One powerful question can change someone's direction more than An hour-long lecture or a 4-hour curriculum. I've watched clients come into a session convinced they needed someone to tell them what to do. Hey, Rob, I got this going on in my business. What do I do? Rob, this is happening with my marriage. What do I do? Rob, I feel insecure about whatever it is. Tell me what to do. But instead, they actually left with something a lot more valuable. They left with clarity, ownership, commitment. And those are the things that last. Advice doesn't. Matter of fact, if I gave advice, I have no idea what the percentage would be, but I'm pretty sure it's a pretty high percentage that if I gave out advice, most people wouldn't use it or they wouldn't apply it the way that we had talked about. That's why offering things like commitment, clarity, ownership, insight, awareness, You know, most people know that they should exercise. They know they should have sit-down conversations. At times, it may be difficult. They know that they should set some boundaries. They know that they should spend more time with their family, or maybe some less time with the family. They know that they should take care of themselves. And honestly, knowledge isn't the obstacle. The number of times I've heard, yeah, I know, as a comment in the coaching sessions, I can't even begin to tell you. Knowledge isn't the obstacle. Action is. Fear is. Self-doubt is. Old habits. Limiting beliefs. And that's where coaching creates change. Not by giving someone more information, but by helping people move from knowing to doing. That's the journey. That's the journey that I'm passionate about. Whether I'm coaching veterans that are transitioning into civilian life, whether it's been 6 days, 6 years, 16 years, whatever it is. Whether I'm coaching those vets, whether I'm coaching professionals that are trying to rediscover a purpose, maybe it's young people learning confidence, or someone simply trying to become the best version of themselves, my goal always stays the same. I don't want you to create I don't want us to create dependence on me. Now, I've got clients that they came in, they were after certain goals, they met those goals, but they still stay on as clients because now it's maintenance. It's like going to the gym to get healthy. You want to lose 25 pounds, you go to the gym, you lose that 25 pounds, you bulk up some muscle. Do you just quit going to the gym? No, you stay. And sometimes you need to stay with a personal trainer. It takes you either to that next level or helps you change up the routine because it's getting a little dull. Or maybe something's changed in your health. But it's never about dependence on me. It's to help them build confidence in themselves because the best compliment The greatest compliment that a coach can receive isn't that I had all the answers. It's hearing someone say, you helped me discover mine. That's transformation. Now, it's slower than information. It's harder than information, but it lasts a lot longer. So, Today, I want you to ask yourself one question. One question. Where in your life are you collecting information instead of creating transformation? I'm going to say it one more time because I want you to catch this. Where in your life are you collecting information instead of creating transformation? Transformation. You know, maybe today isn't about finding another book or another podcast or another course. Maybe today is about taking one action on something you already know. And if you don't know it, that's a perfect time To reach out to a coach, whether that's me or someone else. Now, by the way, I just launched a 1-year transformation course.
